Oklahoma Wheat Harvest Begins Across Southern and Central Oklahoma All at the Same TimeMon, 01 Jun 2020 15:14:44 CDT
Oklahoma wheat harvest began with a few sample loads of wheat around the Oklahoma/ Texas state line in Grandfield, on May 21st-23rd. Rain and high moisture hindered producers from getting back into the fields at full speed until this past weekend. Farmers were able to get good starts in Southwest Oklahoma over the past couple days with harvest also beginning in parts of Central Oklahoma around Okarche, Piedmont, Cashion, Omega and Loyal. Harvest is also taking place around Hobart, Gotebo, Rocky and Sentinel, with producers around Lawton, Chickasha and Apache reporting it will be a few days longer until the wheat is ready for cutting. We have had some early reports of combines rolling as far North as Bison and Marshall, although actual yields are too early to report.
While it generally takes harvest a couple days to catch up to the central regions, due to the moisture in Southwest Oklahoma last week, it looks like harvest is going to be ready all at once in many areas across the state. Low yield reports are coming in as expected from most all areas of Southwest Oklahoma due to severe freeze damage and in areas that have been plagued with hail earlier in May. Reports are ranging from 5 to 25 bushels per acre. The central regions are faring better, with yields being reported in the mid 40ís to mid 50ís depending on varieties and location. Test weights across the state are coming in exceptionally well.
Reports of some weights in the high 50ís have been noted, but overall most test weights are in the 60 to 63 lbs. per bushel range. A couple reports came in at 65 to 66 lbs. per bushel on some fields in central Oklahoma. Proteins are varying across the board. Proteins are in the range of 11.5% to 12% in many parts of Southwest Oklahoma, with lower proteins being reported in Central Oklahoma in the 9% to 11% range. Some 12% proteins in Central Oklahoma have been reported as well.
Grandfield/Chattanooga-Harvest in this region has been moving along the last three days. Yield reports are ranging from 5 to 25 bushels per acre, with an occasional field being reported in the low 30ís. Test weights have ranged from 58 lbs. to 62 lbs. per bushel, with the average running at 61 lbs. per bushel. Much of the wheat has been put up for hay, and it looks like approximately only 1/3 of the crop that is normally harvested will be hauled to elevators. Proteins have not been reported from this area.
Frederick-Harvest in this region has been moving ahead but yields are being reported across the board from the 10 to 20 bushel per acre range. Test weights are running from 60 lbs. to 62 lbs. per bushel. Much of the crop has been put up for hay, with very little intended for harvest.
Altus/ Hobart/Lone Wolf/Gotebo-Harvest from these locations has been moving at full speed, but yields so far have been a little more disappointing than what was expected. Test weights are ranging from 58 lbs. to 61 lbs. per bushel and yields for the area are being reported at 5 to 30 bushels per acre depending on the variety and location. Elevation has played a major factor on how the late freeze impacted the crop, with producers reporting some fields having higher yields in the regions with higher elevations and complete losses when they get into the lower lying vicinities. Proteins have been reported to be extremely favorable in the ranges of 12% to 12.5%.
Lawton/Apache- No reports of wheat being harvested in this region currently.
Sentinel/Rocky- Harvest is just getting a good start the last couple days in this region. At both locations yields are being reported in the low to mid 20ís for the most part. The severe drought, late freeze and heavy hail damage have really impacted what will be harvested. A lot of wheat has been put up for hay already. Test weights on the wheat being harvested is ranging from 60lbs. to 62 lbs. per bushel.
Hinton- No reports of wheat being harvested in this region currently.
Okarche/Piedmont/Cashion- Harvest has just gotten started the past two days in this region. Yields are ranging anywhere from the mid 30ís to the mid 50ís for the most part depending on variety and location. Test weights are extremely favorable ranging from 61lbs. to 65 lbs. per bushel. Proteins are a mixed lot, ranging from 9% to 11%.
Reeding/Kingfisher/Omega/Loyal- Producers are just getting a good start in this region. Yields have been reported in the low to mid 40ís for the most part. Test weights have also been positive with reports ranging from 60 lbs. to 64 lbs. per bushel. They have also had one or two reports of test weights as high as 66 lbs. per bushel. Proteins are ranging from 10% to 12% depending on variety and location.
Bison and Marshall- We have had reports of some wheat being taken at Bison and combines also moving around the Marshall area. It is to early to report we plan to have more to report from this area on Wednesday this week.
