Latest Fire Situation Report Shows No Burn Bans Currently In Effect
Fri, 09 Oct 2020 10:03:58 CDT
Looking at the Latest Fire Situation Report for October 9, Above normal temperatures and persistent dry conditions will result in elevated fire danger focused in western Oklahoma through the weekend peaking on Sunday afternoon ahead of a dry cold front. A Fire Weather Watch is in effect for Cimarron and Texas counties Sunday afternoon and into the evening hours.
Provided the forecast expectations remain in place, an upgrade to a Red Flag Warning on Sunday in the western Oklahoma Panhandle should be anticipated. Elevated fire weather inputs, dry conditions and accelerated drying of fuels across western Oklahoma will likely lead to increased initial attack activity through the weekend although potential for large fire occurrence is expected to be very limited. Today: Morning fog and very good overnight recovery will hold development of fire danger in central and eastern Oklahoma to a brief period in the afternoon and early evening hours.
Fire danger concern today will be greatest in the Oklahoma Panhandle and the far western tier of counties along the 100th Meridian. · Oklahoma Panhandle/Western Tier: Temperatures will warm into the upper-80°'s to mid-90°'s with relative humidity values this afternoon ranging from 7-20% driving fine-dead fuel moisture values into the 3-4% range. Although remnant live fuel moisture is still effective to some extent, the area has not received any rainfall in nearly thirty days resulting in a transition toward increasing fuel availability. Generally, southerly winds will prevail today 10-19 mph with higher gusts this afternoon.
The western Panhandle will see winds shift to the north through morning into afternoon. Fire behavior is expected to be conducive to initial attack success with rates of spread 95-130 ft./min. and headfire flame lengths 7-12 ft. Saturday: Respectable overnight moisture recovery will serve to stall development of fire danger across most of Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Panhandle and possibly far northwestern Oklahoma will see fine-dead fuel moisture values at 4% with 3% more likely in Cimarron County as temperatures warm into the upper 80°'s and relative humidity values fall below 20%. Southeast winds around 10 mph with limited gusts will temper fire behavior holding rates of spread generally less than 100 ft./min. noting that areas of more rank fuels may exhibit increased activity. Sunday: Again, a Fire Weather Watch is currently in effect for the western Oklahoma Panhandle anticipating potential for a Red Flag Warning to be issued. ·
Oklahoma Panhandle/Western Oklahoma: In the pre-frontal fire environment, fire danger will noticeably increase in the afternoon and early evening hours as temperatures warm 87°-95° and relative humidity values tap the 9-18% range across western Oklahoma. Fire behavior in typical, grass dominated fuels will average 130-180 ft./min. with flame lengths 9-12 ft. as southwest winds increase in the afternoon sustained 14-21mph with some gusts near 30 mph. Areas where dense, un-grazed fuels are present may see increased fire behavior. · Initial attack activity is likely to increase in portions of central and eastern Oklahoma as well with dry conditions prevailing.
Fire behavior at this time is expected to be moderate although rank, grass-dominated fuels will exhibit rates of spread in excess of 120 ft./min. to 180 ft./min. Timber fuels remain shaded and sheltered in large part with much reduced fire behavior overall.
Near-Term Outlook: Fire danger will persist into the early part of next week with dry conditions expected to persist. Given the current forecast information, no appreciable moisture is expected to turn back the building fire danger. While large and/or significant fire occurrence is not likely the expectation for increasing initial attack activity is probable. Burn Bans: No Burn Bans currently in effect.
