OYE is a Great Opportunity to Teach And Develop Life-Long Skills For The Exhibitors, Says Steer Judge Jack Ward

Thu, 18 Mar 2021 15:07:45 CDT

OYE is a Great Opportunity to Teach And Develop Life-Long Skills For The Exhibitors, Says Steer Judge Jack Ward Jack Ward, executive vice president of the American Hereford Association, judged the market steers at this year's Oklahoma Youth Expo and after wrapping up the classes Thursday afternoon he talked with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays.

It was incredible as I told the crowd I have had the opportunity to judge this show a number of times and this year it was just an incredible show, Ward said.

After last year I told the exhibitors don't take anything for granted, he said.

As someone who makes his living in the purebred seedstock industry, Ward said shows like OYE is a definite positive.

Judging a steer show is no different than judging a good breeding cattle show, as they have to be good, Ward said.

Market animals have to be structurally good with good muscle and finish, he said.

Teaching the young folks when selecting an animal, they have to be informed and learn to feed these calves, Ward said.

Any time we have an opportunity to teach these skills to young folks and develop their skills it is important as we need to produce good young productive adults and these kinds of shows do that really well, Ward said.

The purpose of these livestock shows is two-fold as we're making selections and developing these young folks, ward added.
