2021 Oklahoma Junior Wheat Show's Call for Entries- Bring Your Samples to Stillwater

As we progress through the summer, we near the date for the annual Oklahoma Wheat Commission's Junior Wheat Show.
Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays spoke with Mike Schulte, executive director of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission, and he said the visual part of the competition is set for Tuesday July 20 at the Payne County Fairgrounds.
Samples will be accepted starting at 8 a.m., and they will stop being taken at 8:30 a.m., Schulte said.
Judging will begin thereafter with the 4-H and FFA divisions, which usually takes a couple of hours, he said.
If participants wish to enter and submit their 10-pound sample from the wheat varieties they planted this year, they need to arrive between 7:30 to 7:45 a.m. Tuesday morning, Schulte said.
He added samples can also be mailed and should be done so by the Thursday July 15 so they arrive in time for the competition.
Schulte said he expects higher volume in entries year as wheat quality was high from southwest Oklahoma up into the northern part of the state.
"This is going to be a wonderful opportunity, even for students in southwest and central Oklahoma who might go through harsher environments than typically seen in northern Oklahoma," Schulte said. "This could be their year due to the really good functionality qualities seen in the analytical tests."
Each year they award $16,000 in scholarships to the top winners in the 4-H and FFA divisions funded by check-off dollars, Schulte said.
Students are eligible to compete each year, Schulte said, so depending on students' involvement over the course of their 4-H and FFA years, they can accumulate a decent amount of money for college.
Over the next couple months, the contestants and samples will go through a milling and baking component to the contest, he said. A banquet will also be held November 17 in Oklahoma City where students will be awarded their prizes, he added.
More information about this part of the competition will be released in the upcoming months.
Schulte concluded he is excited for the competition, as he believes it is a wonderful way for students to get involved and have their eyes opened to different opportunities agriculture presents.
