Crop Progress Shows Corn and Sorghum Ratings Slipping- Soybean and Cotton Gaining Versus Last Week

Crop Progress Shows Corn and Sorghum Ratings Slipping- Soybean and Cotton Gaining Versus Last Week USDA's weekly Crop Progress report Monday shows the good to excellent condition of corn down another two percentage points while the soybean crop condition improved slightly. The 2021 Cotton Crop conditions is down one point from a week ago while the Grain Sorghum Crop has slipped another 4 percentage points in the good to excellent condition ratings. Winter wheat harvest is nearly complete.


As of Sunday, the U.S. had 91% of its corn crop in the silk stage vs. 86% five-year average. The USDA says that 38% of the U.S. corn crop is in the dough stage vs. 33% five-year average. On Monday, the U.S. corn condition rating was marked at 62% good/excellent vs. 64% a week ago.


As of Sunday, the USDA estimated that 86% of the nation's soybean crop is blooming vs. an 82% five-year average. The USDA noted that 58% of the soybeans are in the setting pods stage vs. a 52% five-year average.For soybeans, 60% is rated good/excellent, above 58% a week ago.

Cotton crop now has half of the 2021 crop setting bolls- off three points from the five year average. The good to excellent ratings for cotton sits at 60%- off one point from last week.


The grain sorghum crop is now 57% headed- three points ahead of the five year average- with the good to excellent ratings slipping again this week from 66% last week to 62% this week.


In its report Monday, the USDA said that 91% of the U.S. winter wheat crop is harvested, ahead of the 86% five-year average.The U.S. spring wheat crop is rated as 10% good/excellent, vs. 9% a week ago- but the real story is the poor to very poor ratings- now at 64%. USDA says 17% of the crop is already harvested, ahead of the five-year average of 8%.

Finally- pasture and range conditions slipped two percentage points this week to 32% good to excellent versus 34% last week- the poor to very poor raqtings remain at 42% this week- same as a week ago. Two states are simply awful- Montana and Washington both show 96% poor to very poor pasture and range conditions.

According to the Oklahoma Crop Progress and Condition report- Small Grains: Oats harvested reached 95 percent, down 4 points from the previous year and down
4 points from normal.

Row Crops: Corn silk reached 84 percent, up 1 point from the previous year and up 2 points from normal. Corn dough reached 23 percent, down 9 points from the previous year and down 11 points from normal. Sorghum headed reached 32 percent, down 12 points from the previous year and down 11 points from normal. Sorghum coloring reached 10 percent, down 4 points from the previous year and down 8 points from normal. Soybeans emerged reached 95 percent, up 1 point from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Soybeans blooming reached 42 percent, down 1 point from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Soybeans setting pods reached 8 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and down 7 points from normal. Peanuts pegging reached 56 percent, down 4 points from the previous year and down 8 points from normal. Cotton squaring reached 72 percent, down 11 points from the previous year and down 13 points from normal. Cotton setting bolls reached 23 percent, down 11 points from the previous year and down 11 points from normal.


Hay: The second cutting of alfalfa hay reached 96 percent. The third cutting of alfalfa hay reached 50 percent, down 14 points from the previous year and down 8 points from normal. The second cutting of other hay reached 40 percent, up 4 points from the previous year but down 5 points from normal.    

Pasture and Livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 66 percent good to excellent. Livestock condition was rated at 76 percent good to excellent.

According to the Kansas Crop Progress and Condition report from Monday August second- "Corn condition rated 2% very poor, 8% poor, 25% fair, 54% good, and 11% excellent. Corn silking was 88%, equal to both last year and the five-year average. Dough was 46%, behind 51% last year, but near 42% average. Dented was 4%, behind 10% last year, and near 8% average.


"Soybean condition rated 4% very poor, 6% poor, 31% fair, 53% good, and 6% excellent. Soybeans blooming was 71%, behind 77% last year, and near 72% average. Setting pods was 39%, behind 53% last year, but near 38% average.   


"Sorghum condition rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 27% fair, 60% good, and 6% excellent. Sorghum headed was 43%, near 41% last year, and ahead of 38% average. Coloring was 3%, equal to both last year and average.


"Cotton condition rated 0% very poor, 5% poor, 34% fair, 56% good, and 5% excellent. Cotton squaring was 84%, near 85% last year, but ahead of 76% average. Setting bolls was 43%, ahead of 27% last year, and well ahead of 23% average.   


"Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 3% very poor, 13% poor, 32% fair, 48% good, and 4% excellent."
