Shaky Chinese Economy Sends Ripples Through Crop Markets, Among Others
Thu, 23 Sep 2021 14:55:38 CDT
This week on SUNUP, Oklahoma State University Grain Marketing Specialist Kim Anderson talks about how China's weak economy is affecting crop markets, among others.
"I think most of what is happening to the crop markets is outside the markets," Anderson said. "The big thing is China."
Early this week, Chinese real estate development giant Evergrande began to crumble under its $300 billion debt, sending ripple effects through global markets.
"China is having financial problems and they have a weak economy right now," Anderson said. "I think the world is nervous about that."
Anderson said another cause of this week's crop market volatility could be linked to news out of the Federal Reserve.
"They are trying to decide when to - slow down buying bonds (and) maybe raise interest rates," Anderson said.
Lastly, input costs are high.
"Some of them have doubled in price," Anderson said. "There is a lot going on outside of what is going on with corn, beans and wheat."
