Meet State Rep Danny Sterling- Chair of the Oklahoma House Rural Caucus
Wed, 26 Jan 2022 05:31:52 CST
All of the members of the Oklahoma House Rural Caucus represent farmers, ranchers and others who choose to live in the countryside across Oklahoma. But in the case of many of the members of the caucus- they also have surburban and even urban voters that are a part of their districts. A good example is the chairman of the Caucus here in 2022, Rep Danny Sterling of District 27. Sterling's district stretches from the eastern edge of Moore south east down to Konawa in Seminole County.
Oklahoma Farm Report's Ron Hays caught up with Sterling and other members of the Rural Caucus Tuesday evening during a fundraiser for Caucus members. The lawmaker said he is proud of the wide open spaces that he represents- but that he also works hard to represent those that are in more surburban settings. Regarding his diverse district- "I really enjoy that because that requires me to be very engaged in all issues- not just rural or urban."
Looking ahead to the start of the legislative session- "Probably one of the hot topics this year is the medical marijuana issue and how it affects rural Oklahoma and our constituents- that's something we are very concerned about."
He also mentions the desire of many of the members of the caucus- including himself- to continue to see progress in bringing rural broadband to every corner of the state. "We have really embraced opportunities for rural broadband- one of the things I ran on when I was running for office is those areas I represent that are very rural or sparsely populated is to get those folks rural broadband." He says that he and other members of caucus want to see citizens who live outside of the more populated areas the chance to enjoy rural life but at the same time be connected for school or commerce.
