Oklahoma Farm Bureau County Leaders Discuss Issues and Honor Ten State Lawmakers with OKFB Champion Award

The 2022 Oklahoma Farm Bureau Leadership Conference covered a lot of ground on Tuesday as over a hundred county leaders participated in the event. OKlahoma Farm Report Senior farm and ranch broadcaster Ron Hays talked with Rodd Moesel during one of the breaks at the Conference- President Moesel telling Hays that there are a lot of issues that impact the members of the state's largest general farm organization- and many of them were covered over the course of the day. The morning session spotlighted medical marijuana. Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics Director Donnie Anderson and Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority Executive Director Adria Berry shared insight into the medical marijuana industry's rules and regulations and the future of the industry.
Later in the day, Senator Roger Thompson and Representative Kevin Wallace, chairs of the appropriations and budgets committees in their respective chambers, shared an update on the state budget, and Oklahoma State Auditor & Inspector Cindy Byrd explained how her office reviews financial accounts. Byrd also raised questions about HB2990- saying the plan to give County Commissioners much greater power could upset the carefully crafted checks and balances now in place in county government which she believes makes the County Government system in Oklahoma the most transparent governmental structure that the state has.
Oklahoma's congressional delegation was represented by staff and provided insight on the happenings at our nation's capitol. The staffers took multple questions about the groundwork that is now being laid for the 2023 Farm Bill debate.
The National Agricultural Law Center Director Harrison Pittman was the Conference keynoter, as he shared how the organization aids our industry in research and information in relation to laws and regulations.
In the evening, Ten Oklahoma legislators were honored with the 2021 Oklahoma Farm Bureau Champion award at the organization's annual leadership conference Feb. 15 in Oklahoma City.
The award is presented to state lawmakers who serve as exemplary advocates for Oklahoma agriculture, going above and beyond for the state's farmers and ranchers during the 2021 legislative session.
"Decisions made at the state Capitol have a lasting effect on the way Oklahoma farmers and ranchers raise crops and livestock," said Rodd Moesel, OKFB president. "We are thankful for lawmakers who understand the rural way of life and stand up for agriculture in our state."
The 2021 award recipients include House Speaker Charles McCall, Atoka; Rep. Ryan Martinez, Edmond; Rep. Dell Kerbs, Shawnee; Rep. Carl Newton, Cherokee; Rep. John Pfeiffer, Orlando; Sen. Greg Treat, Oklahoma City; Sen. Darcy Jech, Kingfisher; Sen. Lonnie Paxton, Tuttle; Sen. Frank Simpson, Springer; and Sen. Zack Taylor, Seminole.
Champion award winners were nominated by county Farm Bureau members and the OKFB board of directors. Award recipients received a plaque in recognition of their service to agriculture and rural Oklahoma.
