Thu, 24 Feb 2022 20:31:56 CST
Oklahoma's Senior Senator Jim Inhofe is preparing to make a public announcement on Friday that he will resign from the US Senate at the end of this calendar year. The Senior member of the Oklahoma Congressional delegation first went to Washington as a Congressman in 1987 and then moved over to the Senate- winning his first term in 1994. He was elected to his sixth term in 2020.
Sources have told the Oklahoma Farm Report that Inhofe talked with his Senate Staff- both his personal staff as well as key staffers in the Committees he serves as a senior minority member on Thursday afternoon informing them of his decision.
Inhofe expected to publically announce his plan for retirement in a news conference Friday. The reports say Inhofe will remain in his seat through the end of the congressional session. The announcement is expected to come at a news conference at 12:30 p.m.
Inhofe, 87, already announced after his reelection in 2020 that this would be his last term.
The first national media outlet that came out with what they felt they knew about Inhofe was the New York Times, quickly followed by Politico.
Several media outlets have identified who they think may step up and take a shot at this Senate seat which is poised to become open for the first time since 1996.
Possibles for Inhofe's final four years in his current term include:
New York Times speculates
Matt Pinnell, the state's lieutenant governor
T.W. Shannon, the former speaker of the Oklahoma House of Representatives
R. Trent Shores, a former U.S. attorney in the state
Most members of Oklahoma's House delegation
Oklahoman speculates
TW Shannon
Luke Holland (Inhofe Chief of Staff)
Rep Kevin Hern
Rep Markwayne Muillin
Politico speculates
Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, who has increased his national profile over the past two years.
Lt. Gov. Matt Pinnell,
former Oklahoma House Speaker T.W. Shannon
former U.S. Attorney Trent Shore.
Reps. Markwayne Mullin and Kevin Hern are viewed as likely contenders
With Senator Inhofe ending his decades of public service at the end of this year- his departure could shake up multiple races for Congress and even for Governor here in 2022. Announcements could come in a matter of days or weeks- with the officicial filing period set for April 13, 14 and 15. The Primary where many of the winners and losers could be identified will be held June 28th.
The shoes will officially start to drop midday on Friday, February 25th.
