U.S. Good to Excellent Cotton Ratings Down 26 Percentage Points Compared to This Time Last Year

Corn and soybean conditions held steady, USDA NASS reported in its weekly Crop Progress report released Tuesday, Sept. 6. The report is normally released on Mondays but was delayed this week due to the Labor Day holiday.
In Oklahoma, most crop ratings hold steady with corn conditions dropping slightly since last week. In Texas, good to excellent pasture and range conditions ratings went up 11 percentage points since last week- hopefully Oklahoma is next up as ratings didn’t change much in this week’s report.
Nationwide Corn:
Corn dough for the U.S. reached 92 percent, down 2 percentage points from last year and down a point from the average. Corn dented reached 63 percent, down 9 points from last year and down 4 points from the average. Corn mature reached 15 points, down 4 points from last year down 3 points from the average.
Corn conditions for the 18 states reported is the same as last week, rated 54 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 19 percent poor to very poor.
Nationwide Soybeans:
Soybeans setting pods for the U.S. reached 94 percent, down 2 points from last year and the average. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 10 percent, down 7 points from last year and down 4 points from the average.
Soybean conditions for the 18 states reported is not much changed from last week, rated 57 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair and 14 percent poor to very poor.
Nationwide Cotton:
Cotton setting bolls for the U.S reached 97 percent, up 5 points from last year and up a point from the average. Cotton bolls opening reached 39 percent, up 11 points from last year and up 7 points from the average.
Cotton conditions for the 15 states reported is rated 35 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 31 percent poor to very poor. This time last year, good to excellent cotton ratings were rated at 61 percent.

Oklahoma:
Corn dough reached 90 percent, unchanged from the previous year but down 1 point from normal. Corn dented reached 73 percent, up 8 points from the previous year and up 6 points from normal. Corn mature reached 29 percent. Corn conditions rated 41 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 31 percent poor to very poor. (Good to excellent corn conditions have dropped 9 percentage points since last week.)
Cotton setting bolls reached 95 percent, up 7 points from the previous year and up 2 points from normal. Cotton bolls opening reached 18 percent, up 4 points from the previous year but down 2 points from normal. Cotton conditions rated 9 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 57 percent poor to very poor. (Poor to very poor conditions have increased by 2 points and good to excellent has increased by 4 points since last week.)
Soybeans blooming reached 87 percent, down 2 points from the previous year and down 1 point from normal. Soybeans setting pods reached 63 percent, down 3 points from the previous year and normal. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 5 percent, up 1 point from the previous year and normal. Soybean conditions are rated 37 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 31 percent poor to very poor.
Sorghum headed reached 91 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and down 2 points from normal. Sorghum coloring reached 60 percent, up 3 points from the previous year and normal. Sorghum mature reached 15 percent, up 2 points from the previous year but down 4 points from normal. Sorghum conditions rated 20 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 50 percent poor to very poor. (Since last week, good to excellent ratings are back up to where they were two weeks ago.)
Peanuts mature reached 30 percent, up 5 points from the previous year and up 13 points from normal. Peanut conditions rated 68 percent good to excellent and 32 percent fair. (Last week’s report showed peanut conditions rising in quality, but this week they have fallen 8 points in the good to excellent category.)
Hay:
The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 35 percent, down 5 points from the previous year and down 9 points from normal. The second cutting of other hay reached 90 percent, up 16 points from the previous year and up 20 points from normal. The third cutting of other hay reached 35 percent, up 21 points from the previous year and up 22 points from normal.
Pasture, Range and Livestock:
Pasture and range conditions rated 9 percent good to excellent, 24 percent fair and 67 percent poor to very poor. Livestock conditions rated 38 percent good to excellent, 43 percent fair and 19 percent poor to very poor.
Since last week, pasture and range conditions have not changed significantly. In the good to excellent category, conditions have improved by 2 percentage points, but the poor to very poor category has increased by a point.

Kansas:
Corn dough was 92 percent, near 94 percent last year and 95 percent for the five-year average. Dented was 74 percent, equal to last year, and near 77 percent average. Mature was 38 percent, ahead of 24 percent last year and 29 percent average. Harvested was 16 percent, ahead of 3 percent last year and 4 percent average. Corn conditions rated 21 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 51 percent poor to very poor. (Since last week, good to excellent conditions have decreased by one point.)
Cotton bolls opening was 28 percent, near 26 percent last year, and ahead of 17 percent average. Cotton conditions rated 17 percent good to excellent, 37 percent fair and 46 percent poor to very poor. (Since last week, good to excellent cotton conditions have decreased by 9 percentage points.)
Soybeans blooming was 96 percent, equal to last year, and near 97 percent average. Setting pods was 85 percent, equal to last year, and behind 90 percent average. Dropping leaves was 14 percent, near 11 percent both last year and average. Soybean conditions rated 25 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 44 percent poor to very poor.
Sorghum headed was 86 percent, behind 96 percent both last year and average. Coloring was 42 percent, well behind 62 percent last year, and behind 57 percent average. Mature was 4 percent, behind 10 percent last year, and near 6 percent average. Harvested was 1 percent. Sorghum conditions rated 19 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 39 percent poor to very poor.
Pasture and Range:
Pasture and range conditions were rated 9 percent good to excellent, 23 percent fair and 68 percent poor to very poor.

Texas:
Corn dough reached 98 percent, even with last year and a point ahead of the average. Dorn dented reached 88 percent, even with last year and a point below the average. Corn mature reached 75 percent, 10 points ahead of last year and the average. Corn harvested reached 59 percent, up 6 points from last year and up 4 points from the average. Corn conditions reached 17 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 52 percent poor to very poor. (Conditions are almost same as last week.)
Cotton setting bolls reached 96 percent, 6 percentage points ahead of last year and one point ahead of the average. Cotton bolls opening reached 41 percent, 14 points ahead of last year and 11 points ahead of the average. Cotton conditions rated 17 percent good to excellent, 38 percent fair and 55 percent poor to very poor. (Good to excellent has increased by 2 percentage points since last week.)
Soybeans setting pods reached 95 percent, up 5 from last year and up 6 from the average. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 69 percent, up 13 points from last year and up 17 points from the average. Soybean conditions rated 15 percent good to excellent, 40 percent fair and 45 percent poor to very poor.
Sorghum coloring reached 95 percent, 7 points ahead of last year and 8 points ahead of the average. Sorghum mature reached 80 percent, up 3 points from last year and up 4 from the average. Sorghum harvested reached 68 percent, up 2 points from last year and up 1 from the average. Sorghum conditions rated 17 percent good to excellent, 41 percent fair and 42 percent poor to very poor. (Conditions are the same as last week)
Peanuts pegging reached 97 percent, up 1 point from last year and even with the average. Peanut conditions rated 34 percent good to excellent, 51 percent fair and 15 percent poor to very poor. (Good to excellent conditions have increased by 6 points since last week.)
Pasture and Range:
Pasture and range conditions are rated 20 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair and 51 percent poor to very poor. Good to excellent conditions up 11 percentage points since last week!
