Many Different Factors Impacting Commodity Markets Currently says OSU’s Kim Anderson

Listen to Kim Anderson give his weekly analysis of the commodity markets.

This Week on SUNUP is Oklahoma State University Extension grain market economist Kim Anderson. During this week’s edition, Anderson talks about the many things going on in the markets this week, which he says is uncommon for this time between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“There is a lot going on this week,” Anderson said. “I think the number one thing that we are paying attention to is we got some moisture. The moisture is not evenly distributed around, but I think we can get some excitement with that.

The dollar declined this week, Anderson said, which is good news for exports.

“Our exports have been a little weak over the last month or so,” Anderson said. “We need those exports to pick up.”

Wheat prices bottomed out, Anderson said, with about $1.25 coming off, putting them below 8 dollars, but they are back above eight dollars now.

Anderson also talked about how Russia and Ukraine have the potential to impact the markets more in the near future.

“The fighting is still going on, but Russia- the reports are that Russia is waiting for the ground to freeze, and then they are going to have a big offensive, and the war is expected to escalate,” Anderson said. “I think the market is going to be nervous until we see what goes on when we get into the winter and when we have the winter going on between Russia and Ukraine.”
