Bob Rodenberger Advises Producers to Consider Future Factors when Buying Heifers

Listen to KC Sheperd talk with Bob Rodenberger as he gives his weekly update of the cattle markets.

KC Sheperd, Farm Director, is back talking with Bob Rodenberger, a partner with Stockman Oklahoma Livestock Marketing, as he gives the latest on the cattle markets.

Rodenberger said the cattle market this week was excellent.

“We are selling cattle, I’d say, 20 dollars higher than a year ago- stockers and feeders,” Rodenberger said. “Killing cow market is staying completely still. Still seeing a good run of killing cows. People are still culling cows, we had about 500 cows there at Apache, and I thought we’d be back down in the 200s.”

With more wheat pasture available to graze than anticipated, Rodenberger said many people are buying cattle to turn out. For those buying heifers, Rodenberger said they need to make sure they can support them until this time next year.

“We’ve still got to make a hay crop- we’ve still got to cut hay in June and July,” Rodenberger said.
