Heritage Place’s Spence Kidney talks about “Where Champions are Sold”

Listen to KC Sheperd and Spence Kidney talking about OKC’s Heritage Place.

KC Sheperd, Farm Director, is visiting with the general manager of Heritage Place in Oklahoma City, Spence Kidney, talking about the facilities and events that have taken place there.

Kidney describes Heritage Place as a “hidden gem” located in south Oklahoma City.

“It is the premier horse sale facility for quarter horse racing,” Kidney said. “The company was founded in 1978, and we sell about 2500 to 3000 head of registered quarter horses, primarily for racing. There is a lot of cross-over disciplines with those now for barrel racing and other performance events, but primarily premier quarter horse racing.”

The Heritage Place facility was primarily built for horse sales; however, Kidney said, other types of events are welcomed.

“We basically have a theater-style auditorium that seats about 800 folks where we actually have our sales, and then there is about three and a half or four acres under roof that is contiguous to our sale auditorium,” Kidney said. “So, there are 630 stalls, and a demonstration arena and other areas that we can utilize to host those events.”

Kidney said there is a sale coming up on January 19-21 featuring 960 head of horses. The horses sold at Heritage Place, Kidney said, are top of the line.

“Initially, we were kind of branded at Heritage Place, ‘where champions are sold,’ so we try to hold true to that; however, we don’t necessarily pick and choose what we sell,” Kidney said. “We may pick and choose the sales they go into from time to time when it comes to some of those yearling events, but this company was founded and the place was built for a marketplace for quarter horse racing, and that is what we are.”

The sales at Heritage Place, Kidney said, are open to the general public. This week, Heritage Place hosted a premier Angus sale, the Bases Loaded Elite Angus Sale, which was previously held at Coors field as part of the National Western Livestock Show in Denver, CO.

“They have continued that tradition now as part of the Cattlemen’s Congress here in Oklahoma City,” Kidney said. “The Bases Loaded sale- this has been home to it since COVID, and they just had their largest sale here Tuesday night, I believe it was, and sold over a million dollars’ worth of premier Angus genetics.”

While Heritage Place was primarily built for horse sales, Kidney said the 90×90 foot indoor arena has hosted a variety of events from cornhole tournaments to dances.

“The whole facility sits on about 40 acres,” Kidney said.

For those interested in hosting a sale or event at Heritage Place, Kidney said those interested can contact Heritage Place directly.

“We are in to be good neighbors to Oklahoma City and support the youth and other venues as we can,” Kidney said.
