Today, Congressman Frank Lucas (OK-03) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives adopted H.Res. 11– Establishing the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party:
“Addressing the generational threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party is not a Republican issue or a Democrat issue- it’s an American issue. From the coverup and deception of COVID-19 to the threats and vulnerabilities levied at the U.S. economy to the undermining and theft of our military strength and innovation, the Chinese Communist Party has made it abundantly clear it will not stop short in exporting totalitarianism, aggression, and ideological control around the globe,” said Congressman Lucas. “America’s national and economic security depends on the actions of Congress in the coming years- and the time to address the full spectrum of threats from the CCP is now. We must respond to Beijing’s aggression with policies that restore supply chains and end critical economic dependencies on China; strengthen our military; and end the CCP’s theft of American personal data, intellectual property, and jobs. I applaud the creation of the Select Committee on China. As Chairman of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, our Committee will continue our focus on these issues as it relates to research security and competition with China in technology and space, and I look forward to working with Select Committee Chairman Mike Gallagher and other Chairs and Ranking Members to strengthen America’s ability to address the generational threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party.”
House Republicans have long recognized the threat that the CCP poses to the U.S. and our allies around the world. In 2020, then-House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy launched the China Task Force to develop new and enduring solutions to address the CCP’s global malign behavior. The China Task Force released a comprehensive report with key findings, policy recommendations, and legislative solutions across the domains critical to U.S. strategic competition against the CCP.
The Select Committee created by H.Res. 11 will be empowered to continue the work started by the China Task Force.
The Select Committee will be composed of 16 members appointed by the Speaker, including nine Republicans and seven Democrats and will have the authority to investigate and submit policy recommendations on the status of the Chinese Communist Party’s economic, technological, and security progress, and its competition with the United States.
