After Recent Rains, Oklahoma Winter Wheat Conditions Improve in Weekly Crop Progress Report

Corn and soybean planting progress moved ahead by double digits last week, and winter wheat conditions edged slightly higher nationwide thanks to much-needed rain across parts of the Southern Plains, USDA NASS reported in its weekly Crop Progress Report on Monday.

Winter Wheat headed for the U.S reached 21 percent, down 4 percentage points from last year and down 2 points from the five-year average. Winter wheat conditions rated 27 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 43 percent poor to very poor.

Corn planted for the U.S. reached 13 percent, down 13 percentage points from the previous year and the five-year average. Corn emerged reached 3 percent, down 3 points from the previous year and down 2 points from the average.

Soybeans planted for the U.S. reached 7 percent, down 12 percentage points from the previous year and down 4 points from the five-year average.

Cotton planted for the U.S reached 15 percent, even with last year and up one point from the five-year average.

Sorghum planted reached 20 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and down 2 points from the five-year average.

OKLAHOMA:

Winter wheat jointing reached 92 percent, up 8 points from the previous year. Winter wheat headed reached 43 percent, up 6 points from the previous year but down 5 points from normal. Winter wheat conditions rated 9 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 61 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 6 percent good to excellent (zero percent excellent), 31 percent fair and 63 percent poor to very poor. 

Corn planted reached 37 percent, up 6 points from the previous year and up 3 points from normal. Corn emerged reached 21 percent, up 15 points from the previous year and up 10 points from normal.

Sorghum planted reached 16 percent, up 13 points from the previous year and up 10 points from normal.

Soybeans planted reached 5 percent, down 10 points from the previous year and down 4 points from normal.

Livestock conditions rated 37 percent good to excellent, 45 percent fair, and 18 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 37 percent good to excellent, 40 percent fair, and 23 percent poor to very poor. 

Pasture and range conditions rated 16 percent good to excellent, 26 percent fair and 58 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 14 percent good to excellent, 25 percent fair and 61 percent poor to very poor. 

KANSAS:

Winter wheat jointed was 61 percent, near 64 percent last year and behind 68 for the five-year average. Winter wheat headed reached 11 percent, near 9 percent last year and the 8 percent average. Winter wheat conditions were rated 13 percent good to excellent, 23 percent fair and 64 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 14 percent good to excellent, 24 percent fair, and 62 percent poor to very poor. 

Soybeans planted was 14 percent, near 10 percent last year, and ahead of 6 percent average.

Sorghum planted was 2 percent, near 1 percent both last year and on average.

Cotton planted was 1 percent, near 3 percent last year, and equal to the average.

TEXAS:

Winter wheat headed reached 69 percent, up 6 percentage points from the previous year and up 1 point from the five-year average. Winter wheat conditions rated 17 percent good to excellent, 26 percent fair, and 57 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s ratings were 14 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair, and 55 percent poor to very poor. 

Corn planted reached 74 percent, up 1 percentage point from the previous year and up 5 points from the average. Corn emerged reached 65 percent, up 3 points from the previous year and up 9 points from the average. Corn conditions rated 72 percent good to excellent, 14 percent fair and 14 percent poor to very poor.

Sorghum planted reached 69 percent, up 3 points from the previous year and up 1 point from the five-year average.

Cotton planted reached 20 percent, even with the previous year and up 3 points from the five-year average.

Range and pasture conditions rated 24 percent good to excellent, 25 percent fair and 51 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s ratings were 20 percent good to excellent, 24 percent fair, and 56 percent poor to very poor.
