Bob Rodenberger says Good Cattle Runs Considering Wheat Pasture Conditions

KC Sheperd, Farm Director, is back talking with Bob Rodenberger, a partner with Stockman Oklahoma Livestock Marketing, as he gives the latest on the cattle markets.

Rodenberger said runs this week were steady. Normally runs in May are up around 10,000 head, Rodenberger said, but the shortage of wheat to graze has impacted those numbers.

“Everybody keeps talking about, ‘less cattle, less cattle,’” Rodenberger said. “Well, a year ago, we had 6200. This week we had 7500.”

After May, Rodenberger said he expects to start seeing some changes.

“We plugged the pipeline,” Rodenberger said. “There is only so many trucks, and they can only unload so many cattle at all of these feed yards. That has been an issue, but it hasn’t affected the market that bad.”

While there might be a bigger spread between lower-quality cattle and the top end, Rodenberger said that it may be more visible now, but it has been happening all year.

“In general, the market is good,” Rodenberger said.

Rodenberger said runs next week are going to depend on the weather.

“In general, I think we are going to see basically what we have seen Monday in Oklahoma City, you know, 7500,” Rodenberger said.
