Beef Day at the Capitol: A Great Opportunity to Celebrate Oklahoma Beef

Listen to KC Sheperd talk with Michael Kelsey during Beef Day at the Capitol.

During Beef Day at the Capitol, Farm Director KC Sheperd caught up with the Executive Vice President of the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association, Michael Kelsey, and talked about the event. Beef Day is open to the public, and features booths, lunch, and more.

“It is just a fun day,” Kelsey said. “It is a day to celebrate what we do really well in Oklahoma, and that is beef. Boot shines, information, fun t-shirts- it is a great way to celebrate the beef industry in Oklahoma. We are blessed that we have a lot of members in the legislature, and then we have a lot of members that will show up.”

Beef Day, Kelsey said, is a great opportunity for the rural community to come out and talk with legislators about the beef industry and build those relationships.

“We are not asking legislators for anything,” Kelsey said. “We are not saying, ‘Hey, we need you to do this,’ we are not asking staff to do anything. We are just saying, ‘We are here to celebrate what we do, and we want to celebrate that with you.’”

Regardless of voting party or background, Kelsey said Beef Day is an easy day for anyone to celebrate and be a part of at the Capitol.

“From an OCA perspective, it really helps us in delivering our message to the Capitol all year long,” Kelsey said. “We don’t want to overlook that. It is very important as an organization that we present our message to legislators, to staff members, etc.”

Because so many look forward to Beef Day at the Capitol, Kelsey said the event helps to open doors for the beef industry year-round. Another part of the event attendees look forward to, Kelsey said, is the steak lunch served.

“If it is anything like last year, the line will be wrapped around the second-floor rotunda, and we will run out, which is a great problem to have,” Kelsey said.
