KC Sheperd, Farm Director, is back talking with Bob Rodenberger, a Stockman Oklahoma Livestock Marketing partner, as he gives the latest on the cattle markets.
Rodenberger discussed the minimal impact of the port strike on the cattle market, noting that cattle runs were normal or slightly lower than last year in most places. Apache saw a significant increase of 2,600 head compared to 1,300 last year due to producers selling cows. He attributed the high cow runs to a lack of water and grass, with some regions experiencing both issues.
“In our area, everyone who normally keeps their calves or buys calves are saying that there isn’t going to be any wheat,” he said. “We are still talking 90-degree weather for the next 10 days and no chance for rainfall.”
He added that some producers were delaying decisions until after the upcoming election. He also predicted that the high cow runs would continue next week as people have to match their herd size to their forage and water supplies.
