Farm Director KC Sheperd got to talk to Keely Bowling and Kaylee Springer to learn about the Alva FFA Chore Chicks who provide livestock and pet care services to the Alva community.
“The Alva FFA Chore Chicks is an FFA group of girls who do livestock chores for people in the Alva community,” Bowling said. “It isn’t only livestock chores. It can be letting the dogs out or watering the garden.”
Their services stretch as far as grooming dogs and breaking ice for livestock, particularly useful during winter months.
To access their services, interested parties need only to contact one of the girls who will arrange a meeting with the person to learn what needs to be done and how to do it. Each time the girls visit the property to do chores, they would drop a pin for the homeowner to let them know the job was done.
The idea began when Bowling began helping retired ag teacher Jack Staats with his chores. After a couple of months, Staats visited the ag barn and helped set the work up as a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) to allow FFA members to claim credit for their work within the FFA organization.
The group’s services can be accessed through Alva FFA Facebook and Instagram posts with graphics including their girls’ phone numbers and will continue until Bowling and Springer graduate, after which the group may be opened up to new members.
