Bob Rodenberger Discusses Record Cattle Prices and Market Conditions

Listen to KC Sheperd talk with Bob Rodenberger about the latest in the cattle markets.

Farm Director KC Sheperd is back talking with Bob Rodenberger, a Stockman Oklahoma Livestock Marketing partner, as he gives the latest on the cattle markets.

Seven thousand head of cattle are expected to sell in Oklahoma City today, a lesser number than the five-year average, but according to Rodenberger, that is where mediocrity ends in the cattle markets.

“This market is as high as we’ve ever seen it. If you are waiting for a higher market, I would tell you to take what is available and sell them,” Rodenberger advised. “From a two-weight calf to a twelve-hundred pound killing cow, I mean – it is a seller’s market.”

He noted $2.10 fat cattle in Texas and Kansas, and $2.17 fat cattle in Iowa.

Rodenberger doesn’t know how long the market can sustain such high prices, but with beef demand exceeding his expectations so far, the outlook is positive.

The sale in Apache is expecting average numbers about twelve- to fifteen-hundred this week, with larger runs expected in mid-April to mid-May, depending on how long wheat pastures can hold up. As normal, he advised buyers to protect their margins in the current market conditions.
