Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond joined 10 other state attorneys general in filing an amicus brief this week in support of accurate beef labeling. In the U.S., large beef processors label foreign-sourced beef products under the “Product of USA” label by processing or packaging the products in the U.S.
The attorneys general coalition argued that the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture acknowledges that the current use of the “Product of USA” label conflicts with current federal labeling requirements and asked the court to order processors to stop labeling foreign-sourced beef as a “Product of USA.”
“Thank you, Attorney General Drummond,” said American Farmers & Ranchers (AFR) Cooperative President Scott Blubaugh. “America’s cattle ranchers have long fought to exclude subpar foreign beef from the USDA ‘Product of U.S.A.’ label. We are grateful to see our Oklahoma AG recognizes the negative impact such fraudulent labeling has on both the ranchers who produce high-quality American beef and the consumers who want a truly American-grown product on their dinner plate.”
AFR Cooperative is a membership services organization established in 1905 as Oklahoma Farmers Union. AFR provides educational, legislative and cooperative programs across the state and serves as a watchdog for Oklahoma’s family farmers and ranchers and rural communities. The organization is actively supportive of the state’s agricultural industry and rural population with membership consisting of farmers actively involved in production agriculture and non-farmers adding their voices in support of AFR principles.
