New Urban & Small Farm Hub to Transform Local Food Systems in Southern Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Conservation Commission, Murray State College, Chickasaw Nation, the Oklahoma Association of Conservation Districts, and the Arbuckle Conservation District are proud to announce the groundbreaking for the Southern Oklahoma Urban and Small Farm Hub in Ardmore, Oklahoma. This initiative is set to enhance the quality of life in southern Oklahoma by revolutionizing local food systems and supporting small and urban farms. The groups joined together at Murray State College on Friday for an official signing ceremony and celebration of the project.

Located at Murray State College’s Ardmore campus, the hub will serve as a critical resource site, offering technical assistance, individualized farm planning, educational training, grants, cost-share programs, and retail opportunities. By equipping producers with essential knowledge, skills, and resources, this collaborative effort aims to increase the availability of nutritious, locally grown fruits and vegetables while addressing challenges such as food desertification, lifestyle-related illnesses, and the economic sustainability of small urban farms.

“This partnership highlights the power of collaboration,” said Trey Lam, Executive Director at the Oklahoma Conservation Commission. “By bringing together state agencies, tribal government, higher education, and nonprofit expertise, we are creating a space where conservation, agriculture, and community health intersect.”

A key focus of the hub will be the promotion of natural resource conservation and regenerative agriculture to safeguard Oklahoma’s soil and water. Additionally, producers will have access to a series of mini grants designed to support conservation practices and the adoption of regenerative farming techniques.

One of the hub’s most innovative features is its proximity with Murray State College’s renowned registered nursing program. This collaboration will bridge the gap between agriculture and healthcare by emphasizing the connection between nutritious food and overall wellness.

The campus will also host a vibrant farmers market, providing both retail opportunities for local producers and increased access to fresh food for the community. Complementing the market, an educational teaching kitchen will offer hands-on classes to help consumers learn how to prepare and utilize locally grown food.

“The Southern Oklahoma Urban and Small Farm Hub at Murray State College in Ardmore will play a pivotal role in fostering educational growth and support for area small-scale agriculture producers,” added Dr. Tim Faltyn, Murray State College President, “We are excited to begin this endeavor with our partners to educate producers, students and community members about sustainable agriculture with a focus on healthy lifestyles.”

This project is made possible by an award given by T.I.M.E Inc.
