Crop Production: U.S. Cotton Production Slips Slightly in 2025 Despite Record-High Yields

Corn production Corn production for grain is forecast at 16.75 billion bushels, up 1 percent from last month and up 12 percent from 2024. If realized, this would set a new U.S. production record. Based on conditions as of December 1, yields are expected to average a record-high 186.0 bushels per acre, unchanged from the previous forecast and 6.7 bushels above last year. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 90.05 million acres, slightly above last month’s estimate and 8 percent higher than 2024.

Soybean production for beans is forecast at 4.25 billion bushels, up slightly from last month’s estimate and down about 3 percent from 2024. Based on conditions as of December 1, yields are expected to average 53.0 bushels per acre, essentially unchanged from the previous forecast and up more than 2 bushels from last year. Area harvested for soybeans in the United States is forecast at 80.3 million acres, down from 2024 but in line with last month’s projection.

All cotton production is forecast at 14.27 million 480-pound bales, up 1 percent from last month’s estimate but down 1 percent from 2024. Based on conditions as of December 1, yields are expected to average 929 pounds per harvested acre, up 10 pounds from the previous forecast and up 43 pounds from last year. Upland cotton production is forecast at 13.89 million bales, up 1 percent from last month but down less than 1 percent from 2024. Pima cotton production is forecast at 378,000 bales, down 1 percent from the previous forecast and down 20 percent from 2024.
