National Sorghum Producers (NSP) today welcomed an interagency agreement allowing the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to operate the Food for Peace program and urged Congress to make the change permanent.
“For 70 years, U.S. farmers have been global leaders in addressing hunger by producing safe, reliable food that feeds millions around the world,” said NSP Chair Amy France, a farmer from Scott City, Kan. “Placing Food for Peace under USDA strengthens that mission, supports American-grown crops like sorghum, and improves transparency and efficiency. NSP urges Congress to advance legislation led by Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., and Rep. Tracey Mann, R-Kan., to permanently transfer Food for Peace to USDA.”
NSP said the agreement provides important near-term certainty for producers and food aid partners while reinforcing the role of American agricultural leadership in humanitarian assistance and global food security.
