KC Sheperd, Farm Director, is back talking with Bob Rodenberger, a Stockman Oklahoma Livestock Marketing partner, as he gives the latest on the cattle markets.
Rodenberger discussed the current state of the cattle market, noting that despite some fluctuations in runs and prices, it remains strong due to high demand and premium prices.
“Light cattle haven’t really cheapened up that much,” he said. “There is still good demand on these weaned cattle for wheat and grass, but we’ve seen a pretty good sell-off on the board. It’s got more to do with investors that play the market than with the cattle industry.”
Despite the softening of some areas, he said the market is still tremendous and prices are still higher than anyone is accustomed to. “Everybody has to make a little money in each section of the industry and right now, the one who is not making any money is the packer and the cow calf man is in the driver’s seat,” Rodenberger described. “I know his expenses are higher, but he’s getting a premium that he’s never seen before, either.”
The impending winter storm will shorten the runs in the coming week, but Rodenberger doesn’t expect prices to be affected.
