Arctic Blast Grips Oklahoma, Bringing Extreme Cold and Winter Mix

Oklahoma has plunged into the teeth of an arctic blast, prompting widespread warnings and advisories from the state climatologist. Gary McManus issued a stark warning, emphasizing the severity of the incoming weather and urging residents to prepare for dangerously cold conditions.

An Extreme Cold Warning is in effect for most of the state, with wind chills expected to plummet between -15 and -30 degrees over the next couple of days. These frigid wind chills pose a significant risk of hypothermia and frostbite, making it crucial for Oklahomans to take precautions.

Adding to the wintry mix, a Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the northern part of the state, while much of the remaining areas are under a Traveler’s/Winter Weather Advisory. These advisories indicate that hazardous winter weather conditions are expected, potentially impacting travel. Residents should be prepared for icy roads, reduced visibility, and the possibility of travel delays.

McManus noted that temperatures will continue to drop throughout the day, further exacerbating the already dangerous situation. He also cautioned that icing could knock out many wind sensors, making it difficult to get real-time readings. “You’ll just have to trust me…it’s gonna be epic (not in a good way),” he stated, underscoring the severity of the impending weather.

The climatologist also shared historical context, providing the all-time record low minimum and maximum temperatures for the date. He indicated that the current weather system could potentially break some of those records before midnight. This adds another layer of concern, suggesting the intensity of the cold snap is truly exceptional.

Oklahomans are urged to stay informed about the latest weather updates, take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the extreme cold, and avoid travel if possible. This arctic blast is a serious weather event, and residents should be prepared for potentially hazardous conditions.
