Oklahoma Winter Wheat and Livestock Conditions Improve, Pasture and Range Conditions Decline

According to the latest Oklahoma Crop Progress and Condition Report , Winter wheat progress was reported as slightly behind normal with some field progressing to the jointing stage. Conditions were rated 46 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair, and 21 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 35 percent good to excellent, 36 percent fair, and 29 percent poor to very poor.

Pasture and range conditions rated 33 percent good to excellent, 42 percent fair, and 25 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 35 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair, and 32 percent poor to very poor.

Livestock conditions rated 54 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair, and 15 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 51 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair, and 14 percent poor to very poor.

Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 1.34 inches. According to the March 4th US Drought Monitor Report, drought conditions were rated 81 percent abnormally dry to exceptional drought, up 46 points from the previous year. Additionally, 26 percent of the state was in the moderate drought to exceptional drought categories, up 22 points from the previous year. Statewide, temperatures averaged in the upper 40’s to lower 50’s. Topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions were adequate to short. There were 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork.

In Kansas:

Winter wheat conditions rated 52 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair, and 17 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 54 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair, and 14 percent poor to very poor.

In Texas:

Winter wheat headed reached 10 percent, equal to the previous year and down 6 points from the five-year average. Winter wheat conditions rated 28 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair, and 40 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 34 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair, and 33 percent poor to very poor.

Corn planted reached 24 percent, up 5 percentage points from the previous year and 1 point from the five-year average. No corn condition ratings were provided.

Sorghum planted reached 20 percent, up 3 percentage points from the previous year, and 1 point from the five-year average. No sorghum condition ratings were provided.

Range and pasture conditions rated 9 percent good to excellent, 26 percent fair, and 65 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 9 percent good to excellent, 26 percent fair, and 65 percent poor to very poor.
