Winter Wheat Progress Falls Behind Previous Year & Five Year Average

According to the latest Oklahoma Crop Progress and Condition ReportWinter wheat jointing reached 27 percent, down 6 percentage points from the previous year, and 1 point from the five-year average. Conditions were rated 37 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair, and 29 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 46 percent good to excellent, 25 percent fair, and 29 percent poor to very poor.

Pasture and range conditions rated 20 percent good to excellent, 36 percent fair, and 44 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 29 percent good to excellent, 45 percent fair, and 26 percent poor to very poor.

Livestock conditions rated 47 percent good to excellent, 38 percent fair, and 15 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 59 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair, and 12 percent poor to very poor.

Extreme winds, lack of rainfall, and wildfires were reported across much of the state resulting in reduced soil moisture and crop conditions. Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.01 inches. According to the March 18th US Drought Monitor Report, drought conditions were rated 73 percent abnormally dry to exceptional drought, up 29 points from the previous year. Additionally, 42 percent of the state was in the moderate drought to exceptional drought categories, up 38 points from the previous year. Statewide, temperatures averaged in the lower 50’s to lower 60’s. Topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions were rated short to adequate. There were 5.8 days suitable for fieldwork.

In Kansas:

Winter wheat conditions rated 49 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair, and 17 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 48 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair, and 17 percent poor to very poor.

In Texas:

Winter wheat headed reached 17 percent, equal to the previous year but down 4 points from the five-year average. Winter wheat conditions rated 31 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair, and 37 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 28 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair, and 39 percent poor to very poor.

Corn planted reached 45 percent, up 1 percentage point from the previous year and up 2 points from the five-year average. Corn emerged reached 23 percent, down 11 points from the previous year, but up 2 points from the five-year average. No corn condition ratings were provided.

Sorghum planted reached 37 percent, up 1 point from the previous year, and up 2 points from the five-year average. Sorghum emerged reached 20 percent. No sorghum condition ratings were provided.

Range and pasture conditions rated 8 percent good to excellent, 21 percent fair, and 71 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 9 percent good to excellent, 20 percent fair, and 65 percent poor to very poor.
