Ben Hale Notes Lower Numbers and Higher Prices at Recent Cattle Markets

Listen to Ron Hays talk with Ben Hale about the latest in the cattle markets.

On Tuesdays, Senior Farm and Ranch Broadcaster Ron Hays visits with Ben Hale of Western Livestock Auctions as he talks about the latest in the markets and more. Established in 1995, Western has grown into a multi-generational family-owned and operated business and stands as a symbol of tradition, excellence, and a deep-rooted passion for the cattle industry. Western Livestock Auctions operates the Western Livestock Commission Firm, which sells cattle on Mondays and Tuesdays. They also operate the livestock auction markets in Woodward, Comanche, Knoxville, Iowa, and recently, Waurika, Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma City sale experienced lighter runs once again this week – 3,600 as compared to 6,400 a year ago. “The market is good, and we rebounded again this week,” Hale said. “We lost quite a bit last week which could have been because the board was down pretty heavy and the tariff deal started. Part of it could have been because the cattle weren’t as good last week. This week, it sure bounced back with a vengeance.”

He detailed tight six-weight calves bringing prices in the low $3.60s and five-weights high up in the $3s.

He noted that the heavy rains last week reduced the numbers during the week when prices were also lower, and as prices have risen $5 to $15, cattle numbers have increased a bit this week as well.

Hale expects 1,300 to 1,400 to sell at his new Waurika auction today. On Wednesday, Woodward is expecting lots of yearlings. Comanche will attract some good lots of cows this week as well.

He touted a special cow sale in Waurika on April 26 that is to feature six to eight hundred cows, pairs, and bred cows.
