This Week on SUNUP: Dr. John Michael Riley Discusses the Impacts of Rain and Tariffs on Market Conditions

Dr. John Michael Riley discusses the highs and lows of current grain markets.

This week on SUNUP, OSU Agriculture Economist Dr. John Michael Riley discusses the highs and lows of current grain and cotton markets.

The recent Crop Progress Report showed that 60 percent of the wheat crop had heads, causing producers to hope for a pause in the recent precipitation event that has dumped record amounts of rainfall on certain areas of Oklahoma.

“You hate to say those types of things in Oklahoma at this time of year, but certainly, for wheat growers, it would be nice to slow it down so that wheat crop can finish up and we can finish the season strong,” Riley admitted somewhat regretfully.

Largely due to export conditions, wheat prices are down. “The most recent export reports that we are getting in are showing some signs of weakness. We’re about to end our current marketing year and shift into the new marketing year, so our current marketing year that we’re in is going to look really good with exports.”

He pointed out the multitude of movements in trade policy over the past month or so that will impact wheat prices in the coming market year.

He continued to discuss summer crop markets and planting conditions. Click the listen bar at the top of the page to hear the complete conversation.
