Oklahoma Endures Prolonged Heat Wave, Relief and Rain Chances on the Horizon

Oklahomans continue to battle a persistent heat wave, as State Climatologist Gary McManus reports that hot weather remains firmly in the forecast. While a brief respite from the stifling heat index is expected today, the oppressive conditions are likely to return tomorrow.

The current heat wave, primarily characterized by exceptionally high heat index values, has now stretched to eight days across most of the state. This extended period of extreme “feels like” temperatures has significantly surpassed the count of actual triple-digit air temperatures, highlighting the impact of humidity on perceived heat.

Despite the prolonged heat, McManus notes that the number of true triple-digit air temperature days so far this year is “not too bad” when compared to previous years, offering a small silver lining.

Looking ahead, there are some welcome rain chances in the forecast, though they are not expected to be widespread, particularly across the southeastern half of the state. Nevertheless, “it’s better than nothing,” says McManus, suggesting that any precipitation would be a welcome relief from the parched conditions.

Residents are advised to continue taking precautions against the heat, staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activity during peak hours, and checking on vulnerable individuals as the heat index remains a significant concern.
