Good Record Keeping Critical For Profitability, Regardless The Size of Beef Cow Herd

Mon, 08 Mar 2021 07:48:33 CST

Good Record Keeping Critical For Profitability, Regardless The Size of Beef Cow Herd A tight set of record books could make the difference between profit and loss depending on the size of your beef business said Dr. Nevil Speer, director of industry relations for Where Food Comes From, Inc.

Where Food Comes From, Inc., is a provider of verification and certification solutions for the agriculture, livestock and food industry.

The company is a resource for third-party verification of food production practices in North America.

Speer was recently interviewed for Beef Buzz by Radio Oklahoma Agriculture Network Associate Farm Director and Editor KC Sheperd.

Speer wrote an article on the high cost cattle operations versus low cost cattle operations.

When we start talking about managing costs it is very easy to talk about marketing cattle but managing costs is really a behavior issue, he said.

Itís so important to understand what is coming in and what is going out, he said.

Most producers say I donít have time but at the end of the day some of the most important time is at the computer or with a notebook keeping track of data, Speer said.

Citing data from Kansas Farm Management Assoc., Speer said when you start looking at the differences in profitability from high cost operations to low cost operations it might add up to as much as $600 per cow.

First you must look at feed costs since that is going to represent about 40-50 percent of your costs, he noted.

When producers start managing little bits of information, it usually leads to major advancements all across the operation, Speer said.
