President Donald Trump- When It Comes to the Environment- I Will Always Trust a Farmer Over a Washington Bureaucrat

President Donald Trump touted the recent passage of a new North American trade deal as he spoke to thousands of farmers and ranchers Sunday at the American Farm Bureau Federation's convention in Austin. Among those in attendance was the President of the Oklahoma Farm Bureau, Rodd Moesel. Moesel has led the Oklahoma Farm Bureau delegation to Austin for the 2020 Convention and Business meeting of the general farm organization- and he told yours truly that the President hit almost all of the topics that the farm group is most interested in.

USMCA is one of those topics- as well as the Phase One Trade Deal with China and the partial trade agreement with Japan- and they were all prominent in the Trump speech.

But Moesel says his comments about private property rights and ending the Obama era WOTUS hit responsive cords with the audience as well.

Moesel also believes that Trump's comment that he trusted farmers more than Washington career bureaucrats in knowing how to best take care of their land was very well received by the farmers and ranchers who waited hours for the chance to see the President for the third time in as many years at the National Convention of the organization.

Click or tap here to read more from my conversation with Moesel- and for a chance to hear his comments about Trump- BUT also about policy priorities for Oklahoma as the delegates get ready for their business session on Tuesday in Austin.

You can also jump over to our website and hear the full speech that President Trump gave in Austin last night- shorter than the two previous AFBF appearances - click or tap here for the audio of the speech.

The U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) board of directors elected new officers for the 2020/21 (July to June) fiscal year at their meeting Jan 17, 2020, in Washington, D.C. The board elected Michael Peters of Okarche, Okla. as Secretary-Treasurer. Peters will begin his responsibilities of representing the US wheat industry in July at the summer U.S. Wheat meetings.

"I'm excited. We have a great team here at U.S. Wheat Associates," Peters said after his election as the next USW officer. "I'm sure there will be many challenges ahead but I'm looking forward to tackling them."

Peters said being asked to represent Oklahoma wheat farmers in Italy, Israel and Morocco first peaked his interest in the work being done overseas to promote U.S. wheat. "It is very important to for us to build upon those relationships and support to increase overseas demand," he added.

Dr. Amy Hagerman, with Oklahoma State Universities' Department of Ag Economics, says farmers have some decisions to make regarding the 2018 Farm Law.

I caught up with Amy to talk about the big decision day coming up in March, "March 15 is that hard deadline to get in, and elect, and enroll for ARC and PLC for 19, and then also for 20. The enrollment goes out a little bit further for 20 into June, but that March 15 is a really important deadline for election. If you miss that March 15 deadline, even March 16, then you will be unable to elect and receive a payment for 2019 ARC and PLC."

Hagerman has had the opportunity to meet with producers around the state and says the big thing on their mind is prices and trade. "The first, of course, is prices. Where our prices going, and what is that going to mean for that decision? I think they're really appreciative of the flexibility in this farmland where they are only locking in for two years. Then they have some flexibility to change their election, and the 21, 22, and 23 crop year, because we hope we start to see some recovery for some of our commodities.

The Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association applaud the signing of a Phase-One trade agreement with China and the U.S. Senate vote to ratify the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

"This week has been really positive for the Oklahoma beef industry on the trade front. First, phase one with China and yesterday the final legislative step forward with the US, Mexico, Canada Agreement," said Mike Weeks, President of the OCA. "Trade is so very important to growing the Oklahoma beef cattle industry. Adding value to each and every product of the beef animal increases the overall value that we can receive for feeders and fed cattle. We know that trade adds over $300 to each fed animal. With these two agreements, we can continue to grow the overall value of each calf."

Even as rain begins to fall in some parts of Australia, wildfires continue to devastate large portions of the country. The fires have already destroyed an estimated 10 million hectares, claiming 25 lives and killing wildlife and livestock. Alltech, a leading animal nutrition company, is lending its support to the country's agriculture industry, launching a global fundraising effort for farmers and pledging to match donations dollar-for-dollar. The Australia Farming Relief Fund will provide goods and services directly to producers and will be coordinated on the ground by Alltech family companies Alltech Lienert Australia and KEENAN Australia.

"The Australia Farming Relief Fund represents a coordinated effort among our Alltech family, suppliers, customers and the global agriculture industry to support the producers who feed our families and are the core of our rural communities," said Mark Peebles, managing director of Alltech Lienert, which is located in Roseworthy, Australia. "The bushfires have been devastating, but Australians are resilient, and we are committed to rallying around our farmers as they recover from this crisis."

As farmers assess the damage, the loss of livestock is expected to exceed 100,000. Producers, who were already contending with a three-year drought, are struggling to secure supplies and feed.

The good news for the US beef industry, with the US-China phase one is the word that we're rolling back the non-scientific trade barriers in a significant way with the Chinese. Even with huge trade tariffs that are still in place against US Beef, the easing of these phytosanitary standards should help a great deal.

Kent Bacus, Senior Director for Trade and Marketing for the National Cattlemen's Association, told me, there are still details to be worked out regarding some of these barriers being rolled back. "Well, you look at the document that USTR released today. It shows that this was all supposed to take effect in 30 days. But that still means that our government's going to have to engage with the Chinese government and really work on a lot of the technical points. There will be some growing pains that go with this, I mean that's just natural anytime you're having to make big changes as China's going to have to do, it's going to take some time. It is going to take continued engagement on our end to make sure that they don't become backburner issues.

Bacus said that will be the big focus for the National Cattlemen's Association for the next year or so, to make sure everything is implemented correctly and assisting our government. Still, he said they will also be helping the Chinese, "We're also going to assist the Chinese to the extent that we can so they understand why we use all of these technologies, why our system is as safe as it is. So that they can feel confident in really opening that market."

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is seeking public input to help with the creation of the Higher Blends Infrastructure Incentive Program (HBIIP), a new program that will expand the availability of domestic ethanol and biodiesel by incentivizing the expansion of sales of renewable fuels.

"Feedback from farmers, retailers and biofuels producers is critical to the success of this future program," Agriculture Secretary Perdue said. "Under the leadership of President Trump, USDA remains committed to fulfilling a key promise to American farmers to enhance the promotion of biofuels."
