USDA Posts the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s Final Report |
The U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) today posted the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s final scientific report, an objective review of the latest available science on specific nutrition topics. The report’s evidence-based findings will inform USDA and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as they co-develop the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which will provide recommendations on what to eat and drink to promote health and prevent chronic disease.
“Science-based dietary guidance is critical to ensuring a healthy future for America,” said USDA Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services Deputy Under Secretary Brandon Lipps. “USDA greatly appreciates the high-quality work done by this committee comprised of our nation’s leading scientists and dietary experts. We look forward to thoroughly reviewing the report and leveraging their scientific advice as we partner with HHS to develop the next edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.”
USDA and HHS are accepting written public comments on the committee’s final report through August 13, 2020. The public will also have an opportunity to provide oral comments on the scientific report to the departments at a public meeting on August 11, 2020.

Several Ag Groups Expressed Comments on USDA's DGAC Report |
The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) today thanked the members of the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) for recognizing beef’s role in a healthy lifestyle, including the essential role of beef’s nutrients at every life stage. The DGAC released recommendations to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for the 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGAs), the cornerstone of all federal nutrition policy.
“Cattle and beef producers appreciate the evidence-based recommendations of the DGAC. We believe beef is a wholesome, nutritious food that plays an important role in a healthy diet and we are supportive of many of the committee’s findings,” said NCBA CEO Colin Woodall. “NCBA and its members have made this work a priority for more than two years, and we’re pleased that the report reinforces the strong science which supports beef’s nutritional value in a healthy diet.”
The National Milk Producers Federation said it was pleased that the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s final report reaffirms dairy’s crucial role in a nutritious diet but expressed concern that the committee failed to recognize newer, broader science that shows the benefits of dairy foods at all fat levels.
“The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee today restated what consumers already know – that regular dairy consumption offers essential nutrition that nourishes people throughout their lives,” said Jim Mulhern, president and CEO of NMPF, the largest organization of U.S. dairy farmers and the cooperatives they own. “Across different types of diets and throughout all stages of life, dairy products provide the nutrients people need to be healthy.”

Ethanol Industry's COVID-Related Economic Losses Already Top $3.4 Billion, Could Reach Nearly $9 Billion |
The COVID-19 crisis has already led to more than $3.4 billion in lost revenues for the U.S. ethanol industry, according to an economic analysis released today by the Renewable Fuels Association. Based on the latest projections from the Energy Information Administration and the Food and Agriculture Policy Research Institute, the RFA study also found that pandemic-related damages in 2020 and 2021 could reach nearly $9 billion.
The new study by RFA Chief Economist Scott Richman uses empirical data to assess the actual impact of COVID-19 on the ethanol industry to date. For the period running from March through June 2020, the study found:
- The cumulative decline in ethanol production and consumption exceeded 1.3 billion gallons.
- Nearly 500 million fewer bushels of corn were used in ethanol production during the period.
- Industry revenues from ethanol and co-products sales were reduced by over $3.4 billion due to the combination of reduced output and lower prices.

State Veterinarian Dr. Rod Hall offers these comments, "We have confirmed the disease in Washington County and are investigating very suspicious cases in Osage, Craig, and Ottawa Counties and it has been confirmed in far southwestern Missouri. KSU's Dr. Glynn Tonsor Projects Feedlots To At Least Break Even, Maybe Turn a Small Profit By Early 2021 |
Feedlots are still losing money today, but the bleeding has slowed substantially says Dr. Glynn Tonsor, Kansas State University Extension livestock market economist. On today’s Beef Buzz, Dr. Tonsor, who regularly surveys feedlots, talks about the profitability outlook going into early 2021.
Projected closeouts for someone who is not hedging, for June-August, losses of over $100, Tonsor said. He noted this is smaller than the $300 per head losses they experienced earlier in the spring.
Then September through the first quarter of 2021, probably a break even deal as he projects anything from a negative $20 to a positive $30.
Cattle placed today would be included in those months and if you choose to hedge you could even see a profit margin, Tonsor said.
But that could change depending on COVID-19 impacts on demand, he said.
Tonsor said the main point here is the cattle feeding sector has seen notable improvement since early May.

New Coalition Calls for Immediate Action to Expand Broadband Access |
Congress and the administration must act now to enact groundbreaking broadband connectivity legislation that includes the necessary resources to close the digital divide in this country, according to the American Connection Project Broadband Coalition.
“A bold investment will be essential for the near-term and long-term well-being of our nation. As we make this investment, we must recognize the higher costs of operating in rural areas and ensure that the solution accounts for the costs to sustain these systems while maintaining affordability,” the coalition said in a letter to President Trump, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).
Launched on July 8, the coalition is a collection of 49 major companies and trade associations, including the American Farm Bureau Federation.
In their letter, the groups pointed out that while the lack of broadband connectivity in rural America is well documented, the global pandemic makes solving this problem all the more urgent.

Farm Bureau Asks Senate to Expand Access to PPP for Farmers |
The American Farm Bureau is asking Senate lawmakers to make several changes to the Paycheck Protection Program to make it more workable for farmers and ranchers.
“While the PPP is providing vital assistance to farmers and ranchers who were able to receive loans, more funding is needed to support those shut out of the program and significant changes are necessary for agricultural producers to fully participate in the PPP,” AFBF President Zippy Duvall said in letter to Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee Chair Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Ranking Member Ben Cardin (D-Md.).
According to data from the Small Business Administration, which administers the PPP, only 1.5% of loans were distributed to the agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting subsector. This low participation rate is due to the lateness of SBA’s clarification of farm and ranch eligibility coupled with issues that severely limited loan amounts.

Council on Environmental Quality Releases Updated Final NEPA Rule
|
On Wednesday, the Council on Environmental Quality announced its final rule titled “Update to the Regulations Implementing the Procedural Provisions of the National Environmental Policy Act.”
For the first time in over 40 years, CEQ has comprehensively updated its National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) regulations to modernize the Federal environmental review process, which will benefit the environment, economy, and every American. The regulations, which apply to all Federal agencies, have been complex and unnecessarily difficult to understand and navigate. The result has been excessive paperwork, litigation, and delays. Environmental impact statements (EISs) for Federal highway projects have averaged over seven years to complete and some reviews have taken a decade or more. The modernized regulations will promote more efficient, effective, and timely environmental reviews by all Federal agencies.
CEQ’s final rule will modernize the NEPA regulations by simplifying and clarifying the requirements, and incorporating key elements of President Trump’s One Federal Decision policy. The final rule codifies Supreme Court and other case law, updates the regulations to reflect current technologies and agency practices, eliminates obsolete provisions, and improves the format and readability of the regulations.

Reaction to this NEPA Update rolled in Wednesday afternoon- including a statement from Congressman Frank Lucas who cheered the announcement saying “Today’s NEPA reform is a return to a more streamlined process, cutting bureaucratic red tape and allowing for infrastructure and economic development projects to come online faster, all while ensuring we continue to protect and maintain the highest standards of environmental stewardship. I applaud the Trump Administration and the CEQ for their efforts in making the NEPA work as efficiently as possible for my fellow Oklahomans, and for continuing to bring our regulations into the 21st century.”

American ranchers that care for hundreds of millions of acres of private and public lands across the United States know the importance of implementing timely improvements based on the best knowledge at hand. These changes ensure NEPA does not delay good management practices.”

had 7,302 this week- Compared to last week: Feeder steers sold 2.00-5.00 higher. Feeder heifers traded 2.00-600 higher. Demand good to very good. Quality mostly plain to average, with several drafts being in thin condition. Steer and heifer calves sold steady to 2.00 higher. Demand good.
