Ross Wilson of Texas Cattle Feeders Talks Price Discovery and More with Yours Truly
|
The President of the Texas Cattle Feeders Association,
Ross Wilson,
believes that a reasonable outcome came out of the intense six hour Live Cattle Marketing Committee meeting earlier this week in Denver. Wilson talked about the Committee meeting and the current economic conditions of southern plains feedlots with me Friday after returning home to Amarillo.
Wilson says that all parts of the cattle industry are in agreement that higher levels of cash trade would be a positive for the beef cattle business- "everyone wants to have robust price discovery- there's a group of people, including the Texas Cattle Feeders Association, that have been working really hard for the last several months- and in fact, the last three months have achieved robust price discovery trade levels- negotiated trade- whether it be cash or negotiated base price for a grid that Dr. Steve Koonze's research indicates that we need to get to- which for the TCFA's region is 13,000 head per week- we have actually have 14,000 to 15,000 head a week."
Wilson explains what negotiated trade is- and also describes the compromise plan that came out of the NCBA Summer Meeting that will provide time to see if the current robust levels of price discovery in the southern plains can be maintained or not. The state cattle groups engaged in the debate agreed that a working group would lay out levels of performance in marketing cattle in the weeks and months ahead that must be achieved. If those levels are not achieved- NCBA would then go to Congress and USDA and ask for a path forward to force greater participation in the open market by packers and feeders.

Clay Burtrum named Vice Chair of Federation of State Beef Councils
|
Stillwater cattleman
Clay Burtrum has been elected vice chairman of the Federation of State Beef Councils, a division of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. Burtrum has served as the interim vice chair for the last five months and was elected to continue in this position July 29 at the NCBA Board of Directors meeting in Denver. He will serve in the post through the NCBA Annual Meeting next February.
Active in numerous agriculture organizations, Burtrum served three years as NCBA Federation Region IV vice president and has also served on the Beef Promotion Operating Committee for five years. The 20-member BPOC determines how the national half of the $1-per-head beef checkoff will be spent in research, education, information and promotion programs.
“Industry organizations must work hard to promote the many healthy aspects of eating beef and continue to educate the public,” says Burtrum. “At the same time, we need to make sure beef producers are armed with good and accurate information so that they are able to properly stand up to the competition. It’s our livelihood, and it’s our job to defend it.”

The U.S. Census
records data about people in out nation. It takes place every 10 years. Our hospitals, schools, senior centers, and police and fire departments get money based off the Census. More Oklahomans counted means more money for the things that help make our state great.
The Census affects voting as well. State and federal districts are set by the Census count. If everyone in our area isn’t counted, we won’t have as strong of a voice in the state and U.S. capitals for the next 10 years.
The Census takes less than 15 minutes online or by phone. It has 12 simple questions. By law, your data isn’t shared with anyone except the Census Bureau.

Dredging Project Readies Mississippi River for Efficient Soy Transportation
|
Checkoff-funded research, planning, analysis and design led by the United Soybean Board (USB), has informed the launch of a dredging project to provide crucial upgrades to the lower Mississippi River — a major channel for soybean exports. Once complete, the new depth will unlock long-term benefits for soybeans and other U.S. agricultural exports.
“The United Soybean Board’s mission has always been to create value for soybean farmers,” said
Meagan Kaiser, USB farmer-leader and soybean farmer from Missouri. “More efficient shipping builds value in the supply chain and expands opportunities for our soybeans to reach our customers around the world.”
The Army Corps of Engineers announced it will be funding and proceeding with deepening the Mississippi River from 45 to 50 feet between Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the Gulf of Mexico. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development will also provide funding. This dredging will help deliver soybeans to market in higher quantities and more cost-effective shipments that accommodate larger global ports — creating a more economically productive infrastructure for transporting soy products. For the agriculture industry, the Mississippi River is one of the most important waterways in the nation. It connects the Midwest and Northern growing regions to the global market. But it requires modernization to uphold its competitive advantage.

Cattle Producers Happy To Meet In Person During This Week's NCBA Summer Conference Says NCBA's Colin Woodall
|
After wrapping up the annual NCBA summer meeting in Denver, Colo., this week
Colin Woodall,
CEO of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association visited with me about the impact of having an in-person conference amid the pandemic.
We’ve had nothing but positive response to be here in person, Woodall said. I’m really surprised by that to be honest because I thought once folks got here, they would be nervous, he said.
The cattle producers were the only group meeting at the Gaylord Hotel and Woodall said NCBA took every step possible to keep members safe.
I think a lot of folks just wanted to see each other again and check on how everybody was doing, he said.
The success of the United We Steak campaign promoting summer grilling season was a major topic of the conference.

2020 Nation to Nation Meeting Promises To Be Special
|
Oklahoma leadership for the agencies of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Oklahoma Tribal Conservation Advisory Council (OTCAC) are hosting a “Nation to Nation” Tribal Consultation ZOOM Meeting on Aug. 18. This is truly a special event with all of Oklahoma's sovereign tribes having been invited to attend.
The 9th annual consultation, being held virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic, will represent a government-to-government meeting of the sovereign nations within Oklahoma and the top state-level executives of USDA's individual agencies and mission areas. This annual event provides us with an opportunity to engage with tribal leaders and administrators from across Oklahoma, seeking to identify ways that USDA can better serve tribal governments and tribal members.
“This consultation, whether in person or virtual, is a very significant, and powerfully meaningful event,” said
Gary O’Neill,
Oklahoma Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) State Conservationist. “The Nation to Nation consultation event is a great way to share successes and discuss things USDA can improve on. This consultation leads to stronger and more effective partnerships between Tribes in Oklahoma and USDA.”

The Fed Cattle Exchange, the only weekly fed cattle online auction for the cattle industry, has been acquired by Central Stockyards, LLC from 5150 Productions Company, LLC.
Since 2016 the Fed Cattle Exchange has provided the cattle industry with weekly, cost-effective cattle auctions that provide a platform for price discovery through competitive bidding.
