Livestock Producers Celebrate Legislation To Protect Calves And Lambs From Vultures
|
The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) and the Public Lands Council (PLC) today released the following statement in response to the House of Representatives passing bipartisan legislation to protect livestock from predation, compensate livestock producers who experience depredation by federally protected species, and fund methods to reduce conflicts between humans and predators.
Introduced by Senate Environment and Public Works Chairman John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) and Ranking Member Tom Carper (D-Del.), the America’s Conservation Enhancement (ACE) Act contains a number of provisions designed to address impacts that wildlife and wildlife management can have on livestock production.
One such provision provides depredation payments for livestock producers who experience livestock losses caused by federally protected species, while also authorizing funding for producers to carry out non-lethal deterrence activities. These are both activities previously funded primarily by affected States, despite the federal protections for animals causing the predation. PLC and NCBA have worked with Congress and federal agencies to provide relief to States and producers through improvements to federal regulations and through compensation programs, and the ACE Act provides relief in both ways.

Time for Profitability in Feed Yards is Now Says KSU Livestock Economist Dr. Glynn Tonsor
|
Profitability is now here for feedlot cattle says Dr. Glynn Tonsor, K-State livestock market economist.
The prospects have been talked about and forecast by several livestock economists in recent months and Dr. Tonsor says it’s happening now.
The seeds were planted in the spring when cattle prices tanked.
My numbers were updated Sept. 15 and those numbers are positive through next March, Tonsor said.
On balance, fed cattle prices have improved relative to feeder cattle prices, he said.
Cattle coming out of feed yards in October would have been purchased six months earlier and by my estimates for a price of $122 and we’re projecting a fed calf price of $112 for October, Tonsor said.
That is certainly a positive differential, he added.
The K-State economist says the current futures market is offering an opportunity to lock in some profit now.
Despite uncertainties, including trade, COVID-19 and feed supplies, Tonsor thinks there are some profitable hedging opportunities for feed lots.
I think one needs to think about that, but I am not saying it’s for everyone, Tonsor said.
Other industry experts agree, mainly spurred by the related jump in beef demand.

USDA Launches New, Streamlined Process for Private Lenders to Invest in Rural America
|
The Trump Administration announced that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is now accepting applications for the department’s four key loan guarantee programs under the OneRD Guarantee Loan Initiative.
“Rural America needs a mix of public and private partnerships and investments to build stronger, healthier communities,” USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development Bette Brand said. “Under the leadership of President Trump and Agriculture Secretary Perdue, USDA is cutting red tape and streamlining private investment so we can be a better partner to America’s rural leaders in building prosperity, because we know when rural America thrives, all of America thrives.”
As part of a series of regulatory reforms effective today, USDA has officially eliminated duplicative processes and has launched a common loan guarantee application for the following programs:
• Water and Waste Disposal Loan Guarantee Program;
• Community Facilities Guaranteed Loan Program;
• Business and Industry Guaranteed Loan Program; and
• Rural Energy for America Guaranteed Loan Program.

Devon Provides STEM Grants for Northwestern OK FFA Chapters
|
Two northwestern Oklahoma FFA chapters received boosts to their science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education thanks to grants from Devon Energy.
Mulhall-Orlando FFA will use a grant to purchase a UV safety glass sanitation station, a UV cabinet for disinfecting electronic devices and a handheld UV portable sanitizer. The equipment will help keep students safe during the ongoing public health crisis and will allow them to learn about cutting-edge technology.
Woodward FFA plans to purchase a poly pipe drip watering system for the development of an on-site orchard. The chapter will plant and tend to apple and peach trees and donate the fruit to an area food bank.
“Gaining access to new equipment and technology allows students to explore what’s possible in FFA and the agriscience industry,” said Jacey Fye, executive director of the Oklahoma FFA Foundation. “Devon’s generous grants will help open avenues to prosperous careers and further solidify the value of STEM education.”

Cattle Producers Welcome House Introduction Of PRICE Act
|
The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) today welcomed the introduction of bipartisan legislation to improve the marketing environment for cattle producers.
Introduced by Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-SD.) and bipartisan cosponsors, the Price Reform in Cattle Economics (PRICE) Act addresses several areas of critical importance for cattle producers across the United States. Included in the bill are existing legislative proposals to open new markets for state-inspected beef products, such as the Direct Interstate Retail Exemption for Certain Transactions (DIRECT) Act, and new provisions to aid producer-owned beef processing facilities and increase transparency in fed cattle transactions.
“The Tyson fire in Holcomb, KS and the supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have brought the issues of price transparency in the cattle markets and beef processing capacity to a boiling point within our industry,” said Ethan Lane, NCBA’s Vice President of Government Affairs. “This legislation is a significant step in the right direction as we continue to explore ways to support producers who have been impacted by two major black swan events, in an already volatile cattle market. We are grateful to Rep. Johnson and all the cosponsors for their bipartisan leadership in this space, and will continue working alongside them to see these reforms enacted.”

Rural Oklahoma is full of some of the greatest success stories throughout the entire state and are a main reason Oklahoma is on track to become a top 10 state.
The Road to Rural Prosperity will dive into these stories each week bringing you insight into the great things happening in and to rural Oklahoma. We will bring you stories covering rural life, agriculture, energy, healthcare, tourism and politics all affecting rural America.
The Road to Rural Prosperity is here to tell stories about rural America, for rural America.
It's been quite a journey for Dr. Brett Carver- as his early days were spent in the southeastern part of the US with no thought of being involved in the wheat industry- let alone being a world class wheat breeder. Host Ron Hays talks with Brett about his journey from Georgia and North Carolina to Oklahoma and how he has learned the science of wheat breeding- and has provided Oklahoma wheat farmers with wheat varieties designed to help them grow more bushels of high quality wheat that will please consumers. Today's Podcast is powered by the Petroleum Alliance of Oklahoma.
