OCA's Michael Kelsey Says SQ805 Would Be Lenient on Cattle Theft and Other Crimes
|
Oklahoma livestock producers are concerned if State Question 805 passes, it would signal a leniency towards cattle theft and similar crimes, says Michael Kelsey, executive director of the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association.
The Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association has a longstanding, strongly worded policy against cattle theft, Kelsey said.
If 805 goes into effect past criminal history won’t be taken into account when brought before the court, Kelsey said.
For example, when a person steals cattle one-time versus multiple times, the court would treat them the same, Kelsey said.
Our opinion is if you have a person who can’t keep his hands off our cattle, those past crimes should be taken into account and the punishment should be more severe, he said.
The proposed ballot initiative ties the court’s hands and that’s not a good thing, he added.
It’s not just OCA opposing SQ805, as Oklahoma Farm Bureau and the Oklahoma Pork Council have joined in the fight against the ballot question.
It’s more than just agriculture as there is a broad spectrum of crimes considered under 805.
The cattle association leader said he is also concerned about the serious issue of amending the state constitution.
It can be troublesome to put things into the Oklahoma Constitution, Kelsey said.
SQ805 is just a really bad idea, he said.

OSU's Kim Anderson Talks about the Wheat Price Surpassing the $5.00 Mark
|
Oklahoma State University Extension Grains Market Analyst Dr. Kim Anderson talks about what is going on in the Wheat Markets weekly on SUNUP.
This week Dr. Anderson talks about the price of wheat getting above the $5.00 mark, "I think $5.00 is a big deal. There's a lot going on in the market right now. I think the biggest thing is the importers are buying massive amounts of wheat. Egypt usually has a 3 to 4 month storage, they are now shooting for a 6 months storage, so there's real strong export demand, and that export demand is for bread-flower wheat."

OSU Graduate Sara Scott Focuses On Correcting Misconceptions About Beef Production And The CAB Brand
|
Telling the true and accurate story of the Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB) brand while helping consumers have a quality eating experience is the focus today for Sara Scott, newly promoted vice president of foodservice for CAB.
With more than 10 years of experience in distributor and restaurant strategy, training and marketing, Scott knows there can be misconceptions about beef production and the Certified Angus Beef ® brand.
A graduate of Oklahoma State University in agribusiness and marketing, she was raised on a ranch in northern California and today lives on her family’s ranch in southeast Kansas.
Created in 1978 by a group of family ranchers, the Certified Angus Beef ® brand is the original brand of premium beef. Each cut meets or exceeds 10 standards for quality more selective than USDA Choice and Prime, ensuring its flavor, tenderness and juiciness.
One of the biggest misconceptions is the length of time it takes to build genetics, Scott said.

Rural Oklahoma is full of some of the greatest success stories throughout the entire state and are a main reason Oklahoma is on track to become a top 10 state.
The Road to Rural Prosperity will dive into these stories each week bringing you insight into the great things happening in and to rural Oklahoma. We will bring you stories covering rural life, agriculture, energy, healthcare, tourism and politics all affecting rural America.
The Road to Rural Prosperity is here to tell stories about rural America, for rural America.
It's been quite a journey for Dr. Brett Carver- as his early days were spent in the southeastern part of the US with no thought of being involved in the wheat industry- let alone being a world class wheat breeder. Host Ron Hays talks with Brett about his journey from Georgia and North Carolina to Oklahoma and how he has learned the science of wheat breeding- and has provided Oklahoma wheat farmers with wheat varieties designed to help them grow more bushels of high quality wheat that will please consumers. Today's Podcast is powered by the Petroleum Alliance of Oklahoma.
