The Sustainability Story for Beef Being Told Via Whiteboard Videos- Take a Look!
|
The Beef Checkoff continues to educate consumers about the benefits of beef, and whether it is using the Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner. brand or developing campaigns such as “Rethink the Ranch”, promotional efforts are introducing consumers to beef farming and ranching families around the country that raise beef. To coincide with national efforts this spring, the Oklahoma Beef Council (OBC) and Washington State Beef Commission (WSBC) created a series of new sustainability videos for use in social media and digital marketing.
Building upon an earlier video produced by the OBC, which worked to bust myths associated with the sustainability of U.S. beef production, the new videos focus on the positive role beef can play in the environment and in our daily lives. The video below is one of the new four that have been released in recent weeks- and one of my favorites about the "Superpower" that cows have- Upcycling.

Comark Equity Alliance Strengthens Infrastructure with Great Plains Commodities Terminal Partnership
|
Comark Equity Alliance (CEA), the region’s most innovative grain marketing, logistics and risk management company, continues to improve its infrastructure with the acquisition of the Great Plains Commodities (GPC) shuttle loading facility. The acquisition is in partnership with Producers Cooperative Oil Mill (PCOM) and Farmers Union Coop Gin Humphreys, both in Altus, OK.
The facility operates on BNSF rail, has approximately 1.3 million bushels of upright storage and additional bunker storage. Located in Headrick, OK, just east of Altus on State Hwy 62, GPC offers CEA and its member-owners additional shipping opportunities to domestic, gulf and Latin American markets.
“The integration of GPC into the CEA network will provide our system with additional shipping channels to global destinations, adding more value to the commodities, and ultimately benefiting our farmer-owners,” said CEA President Alan Woodard. “GPC’s location on the BNSF rail makes it easily accessible to several CEA locations via state-based short-line rail. The facility is a great compliment to our Chisholm Trail Terminal shuttle loading facility in Medford, OK, which is located on the Union Pacific rail.

OCA's Michael Kelsey Praises Legislation Establishing Cattle Theft Registry
|
With about one month left in the Oklahoma Legislative session, Michael Kelsey, executive vice president of the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association, said there are some key issues they are focusing on.
Kelsey one big issue has already been resolved as Gov. Stitt has signed into law SB 775 which establishes a livestock offender registry.
This is a great bill, Kelsey said, who credited State Sen. Casey Murdock (R-Felt) and State Rep. Eddy Dempsey (R-Valliant) for authoring the bill.
Anything we can do to increase the penalty for cattle theft we’re interested in, Kelsey said.
This gives us a clearinghouse point of information for anyone who has been convicted of cattle theft, he said.
It’s a central clearinghouse of public information in one location.
Another area attracting OCA’s attention this legislative session is the ag sales tax exemption.
This is very important to us, he said

NACD Climate Action Task Force Submits Letter to USDA on Climate Solutions
|
On April 29, the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) Climate Action Task Force submitted a letter to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in response to its request for comments on climate smart solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change.
“Climate-smart agriculture and forestry need significantly more government investment and action to meet the need of oversubscribed programs,” NACD President Michael Crowder said.
In the letter, the task force provides suggestions to USDA on how to implement the Civilian Climate Corps (CCC), reiterating the association’s ask for at least $1.2 billion in Fiscal Year 2022 discretionary funding for Conservation Operations to bolster local technical assistance.
“Conservation districts and the original Civilian Conservation Corps collaborated on programs and projects to respond to the severe soil erosion issues of the Dust Bowl and can do so again today to respond to climate challenges,” Crowder said.
The task force also emphasized building educational capacity and outreach, addressing the need for resources and funding to further develop educational and training programs for local partners. The letter emphasizes the strength of NACD’s peer-to-peer Soil Health Champions Network, which unites producers who implement soil health management systems on their operations.
Among the numerous proposals provided by the task force, which addressed rural broadband, wildfire funding, biofuels, forest products, environmental justice and more, the letter emphasized the need to center climate-smart practices around the proven success of the existing conservation delivery model.

USDA Must Act Quickly to Harness Farms and Forests to Build Climate Resilience
|
Yesterday, fifth-generation California cattle producer Dr. Dave Daley testified before the U.S. House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests, and Public Lands. Daley shared his expertise on wildfire management as an experienced cattlemen, longtime educator, and survivor of the 2020 Bear Fire in Butte County, Calif.
He serves as Chair of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Federal Lands Committee and Chair of the Public Lands Council (PLC) Ecosystem and Environment Committee.
The hearing addressed the intersection of wildfires and climate change, and explored ways to make our Western forests, grasslands, and rangelands more resilient. Drawing on his personal experiences and decades of knowledge handed down generationally, Daley spoke on controlling the risk of wildfire through active land management practices like reseeding and prescribed burns.
In the Bear Fire last year, Daley lost approximately 80 percent of his cattle herd. Most animals were killed in the fire, others had to be euthanized due to their injuries, and tens of thousands of acres of rich, healthy soil and plant life was incinerated.

Farmer Co-ops Applaud President’s Call for “Buy American” Provisions
|
The National Council of Farmer Cooperatives (NCFC) on Thursday applauded the proposal by President Joe Biden to include “Buy American” provisions in the infrastructure package his administration is proposing. The call came during his speech last night to a joint session of Congress.
NCFC has long called for stricter enforcement of “Buy American” provisions in programs administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) such as the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. Shortly after coming into office, President Biden signed an executive order seeking to close loopholes in how domestic content is measured, to create a new position at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to oversee the issue, and to increase oversight of waivers to domestic preference laws.
“The president has spoken forcefully about the need to ensure that American tax dollars are used to buy products made or grown in America to create American jobs and America’s farmer co-ops strongly support him in this effort,” said Chuck Conner, president and CEO of NCFC. “At the same time, it remains vital that Buy American provisions are enforced throughout the federal government; we heard similar claims of support during the previous administration with minimal follow through or impact. We are pleased to see that the current administration has followed through by naming a Made in America director at OMB to oversee “Buy American” provisions.
