OKFB Partners With McAfee & Taft to Examine Oklahoma Foreign-Owned Land Law
|
Oklahoma Farm Bureau and Oklahoma City-based law firm McAfee & Taft have created a ’video to provide answers on the states foreign-owned land statutes
The informational video was produced in response to questions about land ownership the organization received from members across the state.
Cole Marshall, an attorney at McAfee & Taft, explained the basic tenets of Oklahoma’s laws on foreign ownership of land in the short video.
Marshall said the Oklahoma Constitution and state statutes prohibit any alien - or person who is not a citizen of the United States - from owning land in the state.
“There’s a general prohibition on foreign persons or corporations from other countries owning land in Oklahoma, but they can become residents by taking up residency for individuals in Oklahoma or by qualifying to do business in Oklahoma,” Marshall said.

USDA Announces New Initiative to Quantify Climate Benefits of Conservation Reserve Program
|
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) today announced an initiative to quantify the climate benefits of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) contracts. This multi-year effort will enable USDA to better target CRP toward climate outcomes and improve existing models and conservation planning tools while supporting USDA’s goal of putting American agriculture and forestry at the center of climate-smart solutions to address climate change.
“CRP is a powerful tool for implementing voluntary, measurable conservation outcomes to mitigate the impacts of climate change,” said FSA Administrator Zach Ducheneaux. “Nearly 21 million acres currently enrolled in the program prevent the equivalent of more than 12 million tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. Further quantifying program benefits will allow us to better target CRP to achieve continued climate wins across environmentally sensitive lands while strengthening our modeling and conservation planning resources for all producers.”

Dr. Derrell Peel Explains Challenges With Expanding Meat Processing Capacity
|
Expanding meat processing capacity is one of those issues that falls under the heading of “easier said than done.”
Dr. Derrell Peel, OSU Extension livestock market economist, said there are several major challenges with expanding processing capacity.
There is a lot of interest in these really small, local plants and honestly that is not going to change the overall numbers much, Peel said.
Some proposals for medium sized plants have been discussed but it will take at least two years to bring those plants online, he said.
There is really not much that can change in the short term, he noted.

Sponsor Spotlight
Union Mutual was chartered in 1938 to write property and casualty insurance in the state of Oklahoma. Over the years, Union Mutual has maintained the attitude that started the company and continue to be that company that understands Oklahomans’ insurance needs when they contact any member of the UMIC team.
In poor economic times, in times when national insurance companies either stopped writing or completely left the state, Union Mutual has been there for Oklahomans. Today, Union Mutual writes insurance in all 77 counties of Oklahoma through almost 300 agency locations. These agents provide prompt and reliable quotes for most lines of insurance. Just recently, UMIC launched a new product in the preferred market space that has seen unprecedented growth with our rural customer base and falls in line with our Company mantra of “Protection not Politics”, when meeting the needs of our consumers and agents.
Monica Collison took over as CEO of Union Mutual in May of 2019. Under her leadership and through the hard work of her Union team, the company has continued to see positive results and productive growth with profit throughout the state of Oklahoma. Union Mutual offers a wide variety of coverage options for Oklahomans. For 82 years, Union Mutual has led the way to protect all of Oklahoma.

OSU Extension Joins CDC In Vaccine Education Effort
|
Nearly $10 million in federal funds has been committed to vaccination education efforts through Land-Grant universities and national Cooperative Extension System participants such as Oklahoma State University Extension.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provided the funding to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) to support an innovative approach to reach those rural communities in greatest need of vaccinations in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Our goal is to help people overcome their hesitancy and get as many people vaccinated as possible,” said Steve Beck, state 4-H program leader with the Oklahoma 4-H Youth Development program at OSU. “If we get even 10 more people protected as a result of these efforts, it’s a success for Oklahoma.”

Farmers Market Season Renewing Community Spirit Statewide
|
Much like the annual food festivals and hometown celebrations that center on Oklahoma’s bountiful harvests, farmers markets are kicking off their summer schedules in communities across the state.
Each market varies, but for most weekly popup events, opening weekend is held in late April or May and runs through August or October. As the COVID-19 pandemic loosens its grip on the country and safety protocols are lifted, organizers remain diligent in their attempts to protect vendors and customers.
There are some great Farmers Markets across Oklahoma- and one outstanding example can be found in Weatherford. In Weatherford, event coordinator Ed Crall said the town’s opening weekend in April was postponed last year due to the pandemic, but the market’s organizers learned the delay wasn’t a bad thing.
“Waiting until the first Saturday in May allowed vendors to offer more fresh items from their gardens,” Crall said.
Weatherford’s market is home to eight vendors and typically draws from 85 to 120 customers. Located a block off Main Street, the market’s peak summer produce options include sweet corn, tomatoes and melons along with custom products such as goat’s milk soap and fresh cut flowers.
The Oklahoma Ag Tourism website has a complete list of Farmers Markets that can be found across Oklahoma- that information is available here.

Recognizing the Importance of the Beef Cattle Industry to Corn
|
May is National Beef Month, and there’s no better way to celebrate than to recognize our largest animal ag customer and throw a sirloin on the grill. One out of four bushels of added corn demand is due to beef and pork exports. With such demand, NCGA recognizes the value of industry partnership with the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and the U.S. Meat Export Federation. NCGA has continued to be the sole sponsor of NCBA’s Cattlemen’s Education Series, a partnership that strives to bring the latest and greatest industry information to producers while highlighting the value that corn and corn products, such as DDGs, bring to beef rations.
“Not only do corn growers benefit from the beef cattle industry’s consumption of corn, but adding corn into the diet promotes faster growth, increases feed efficiency in the rate of daily gain and produces steaks with a higher marble score,” said Market Development Action Team Chair Bob Hemesath.
With more than 20 million beef cattle in the U.S., the beef industry consumes more than 1,250 million bushels of corn and provides $5.7 billion in value to the corn industry.
