Attorney General Mike Hunter Announces Resignation |
Attorney General Mike Hunter today announced he will be stepping down as Oklahoma’s attorney general effective June 1.
“It has been a distinct and absolute privilege of a lifetime to serve as the state’s attorney general,” Attorney General Hunter said. “Regrettably, certain personal matters that are becoming public will become a distraction for this office. The office of attorney general is one of the most important positions in state government. I cannot allow a personal issue to overshadow the vital work the attorneys, agents and support staff do on behalf of Oklahomans.
“I thank those who entrusted me to fulfill this role and I am very sorry that I will no longer be here. I also extend a very heartfelt appreciation for those employees who chose public service and to work for the office. The employees in the Attorney General’s Office are dedicated, driven and go to bed every night and wake up every morning with the safety of Oklahomans as their magnetic north. I truly appreciate everything they do.”

The Oklahoma Cotton Council is proud to serve the cotton producers and those who are a part of the cotton industry in Oklahoma- promoting and protecting their interests. In Recent Years- cotton acreage has grown in Oklahoma- and today we are the third largest Cotton State in the US- based on Acres Planted.

NCBA's Colin Woodall Says Terminating Beef Checkoff Would Hurt Cattlemen |
Last July two groups, R-CALF USA and the Organization of Competitive Markets, petitioned USDA to terminate the national beef checkoff program.
Colin Woodall, CEO of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, recently visited with me about the future of the beef checkoff program.
The referendum is not about improving the checkoff but rather killing it, Woodall said.
People need to understand that, he emphasized.
The USDA has been very clear to us, he said. The way it is set up the referendum is a yes or no on continuing the checkoff, period, Woodall said.
The people pushing this have not been very upfront and truthful with those who signed the petition, he said.
Approximately 88,000 signatures would be required for the USDA to establish a new referendum and the only data available shows 12,366 submissions have been made so far. That's the number of signatures that have been gathered online- other signatures have been gathered in person by supporters of holding a referendum.

Use Recommended Dehorning Practices For Cattle |
As horned cattle become less common in the industry, livestock producers need to practice recommended dehorning techniques to ensure their animals’ well-being, said Oklahoma State University experts.
“A successful dehorning plan can improve operational efficiency; it involves the use of a written protocol and skilled personnel,” said Dr. Rosslyn Biggs, OSU Extension veterinarian and director of continuing education for the university’s College of Veterinary Medicine. “Industry experts and veterinarians typically recommend dehorning take place as early as possible.”
The 2017 U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Animal Health Monitoring Beef Cow-Calf Study, released earlier this year, reports that only 7.8% of U.S. beef cattle are still horned. The study shows a significant downward trend from previous reports. Historically, the dominance of traditional breeds led many herds to contain horned cattle.
There are two common approaches to eliminate horns: disbudding before the horns appear and mechanical removal later. Disbudding involves the removal or destruction of the horn-producing corium in young calves. That can occur as early as a calf’s first 24 hours of life.

AFR Pleased with Passage of Ag Sales Tax Exemption Legislation |
American Farmers & Ranchers (AFR) Cooperative is pleased with agriculture sales tax exemption legislation recently passed by the Oklahoma Legislature. Senate Bill 422, authored by Sen. Frank Simpson (R-Springer) and Rep. Dell Kerbs (R-Shawnee), passed the Senate 45-0 May 19 and the House 96-0 May 24.
SB 422 provides clarification and flexibility to farmers and ranchers applying for or renewing an agricultural sales tax exemption permit. Applicants can now qualify for the exemption by providing satisfactory documentation from one of four categories—a federal tax form, such as a
Schedule F, Form 4835, Form 1065, or an equivalent IRS form; a one-page business description form provided by the Oklahoma Tax Commission; a USDA FSA number or program form; or other documents the Oklahoma Tax Commission sees fit to verify involvement in production agriculture.
“Oklahoma’s farmers and ranchers are an integral part of our state’s economy; it is essential we foster a regulatory environment that keeps farming operations successful and encourages the next generation of producers,” said AFR President Scott Blubaugh. “Clarifying Oklahoma’s agricultural sales tax exemption process will provide certainty to our producers, while also providing eligibility guidelines for regulators that ensure the ag sales tax exemption is reserved for active farmers and ranchers."

Argentine Beef Export Ban Provides Opportunity for U.S. Producers |
Argentina’s temporary ban on beef exports leaves a gap in the global markets- and US Cattle Producers could benefit from this Argentine decision.
Last week, Argentina’s president announced a 30-day ban on beef exports as part of an attempt to control rising inflation, which is approaching 50%. In protest, the country’s main farm groups said they would launch a nine-day halt in livestock trading. There are also reports of processing plants in the country shutting down in response to this decision. While the export ban could very well be counterproductive for Argentina, it is unlikely to have a negative impact on U.S. producers and may even lead to increased U.S. beef exports. While the immediate impacts of the Argentine government’s decision are short-term (assuming the ban is not extended), it has the potential to disrupt beef import and export supply chains and will likely place upward pressure on already elevated beef prices.
In 2020, Argentina was the world’s fifth-largest beef exporter, exporting over 700,000 metric tons of beef and beef products. China/Hong Kong is by far Argentina’s largest customer, accounting for over two-thirds of the country’s beef exports.

Cattle Feeders Hall of Fame Inductees to be Honored at 2021 Cattle Industry Convention |
Cattle Feeders Hall of Fame inductees and award winners will be honored on Aug. 9, 2021, during the 12th annual banquet, held in conjunction with the nation’s largest cattle industry gathering. The Cattle Feeders Hall of Fame banquet will precede the 2021 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show, to be held in Nashville, Tenn., Aug. 10-12.
The Cattle Feeders Hall of Fame was established in 2009 to honor the exceptional visionary men and women who have made lasting contributions to the cattle-feeding industry. Inductees for 2021 are Johnny Trotter, president and CEO of Bar-G Feedyard in Hereford, Texas, and Steve Gabel, founder of Magnum Feedyard in Wiggins, Colo.
Dr. Gary C. Smith, visiting professor in the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University, will receive the Industry Leadership Award. George Eckert with Green Plains Cattle Company in Garden City, Kan., and Gaspar Martinez with Harris Feeding Company in Coalinga, Calif., will receive the Arturo Armendariz Distinguished Service Award.

OKFB YF&R to host summer conference July 30-31 |
Farm Bureau members ages 18 to 35 are invited to attend the Oklahoma Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers Summer Conference to be held July 30-31 in Broken Bow.
The two-day conference will offer YF&R members the chance to meet farmers and ranchers from across the state, tour local agricultural facilities and learn more about YF&R leadership opportunities and programs.
Registration for the conference is $20 to be paid during the conference, which includes meals and lodging. Members will stay in the Beavers Bend Lakeview Lodge in Broken Bow.
To attend, please register no later than July 16 by filling out the online form.

OKC West in El Reno had 9,389 head of cattle in their Tuesday and Wednesday sales this week.
Compared to last week: Feeder steers sold mostly steady to 2.00 higher. Feeder heifers traded 2.00-4.00 higher. Demand moderate to good. Steer and heifer calves that were weaned and in condition to be turned out on grass sold with good to very good demand. Rainfall has swept across the trade area and is in the forecast for the rest of the week. S
