Plains Grains Reports Start of Kansas Wheat Harvest- And Full Speed Ahead in Oklahoma
|
On a weekly basis, Mark Hodges with Plains Grains is releasing his latest Hard Red Winter Wheat Harvest Report. Here is the report released on Thursday evening, June 17, 2021:
"The 2021 HRW wheat harvest is now picking up speed as hot temperatures, wind and lower humidity prevails across most of the southern and central Great Plains. Very good yields (generally 40 bu/ac (2.69 tons/ha) to 60 bu/ac (4.0 tons/ha) and test weights (most areas above 60 lbs./bu (78.9 kg/hl) to as high as 65 lbs./bu (85.4 kg/hl) continue to be reported across much of the region.
"The Texas HRW wheat crop is now 38% harvested, those acres are predominately in southern and central part of the state.
"Oklahoma, (now 19% complete with harvest) is also still significantly behind the 5-year average of 41% harvested by this date and continues across from the Oklahoma/Texas border to the Oklahoma/Kansas border. Oklahoma is reporting very good yields and test weights with wide ranges of protein generally 10.5% to 11.5%." (Note- that the 19% harvest reported by PGI is well behind with the Wednesday Oklahoma Wheat Commission Report of 35 to 40% complete.)
"Kansas, (now 7% complete with harvest) and yield, test weight and protein are much like those being reported in Oklahoma."

OSU's Kim Anderson Says Wheat Harvest Is Progressing And The Quality Is Looking Good
|
Oklahoma State University Extension Grains Market Analyst Dr. Kim Anderson talks about what is going on in the Wheat Markets. Dr. Anderson says harvest is progressing up through the state, though not as quickly as would be ideal. This week Dr. Anderson is talking about the wheat harvest progress.
Anderson says the humidity has been a hindrance and caused delayed harvest times, but the recent sun and dry weather should help out. He hopes to see harvest make its way up to Northern Oklahoma soon, possibly even this week. "The quality of the crop looks relatively good, and the test weights all reported probably above 60 pounds," Anderson said. He added that one farmer reported a 66 pound test weight. "Some areas that have small kernels, but overall I think it is a relatively good crop," Anderson said

Stepped-Up Basis, Estate Taxes Reviewed By Texas A&M Through Study
|
The Texas A&M University Agricultural and Food Policy Center recently released a report over the economic impacts on agricultural producers of proposed legislation regarding the stepped-up basis and estate taxes.
Based on the proposed STEP Act and the For the 99.5%, the study analyzed the potential changes for producers passing operations down from generations to generations.
Oklahoma Farm Bureau does not support added taxation for farmers and ranchers.
Because agriculture Is capital intensive, added taxes through the proposed stepped-up basis and estate tax changes would hinder producers from transferring operations through generations.

New “Sustainable Grazing and Pasture Management” Video from SARE
|
“Sustainable Grazing and Pasture Management,” the sixth video in SARE’s “What is Sustainable Agriculture?” series shows how farmers can improve soil health and plant vigor by focusing on the health of their pastures and rangelands. This simple animation is a great introduction to the basic principles of sustainable livestock management and is intended to complement more detailed training materials.
The animation illustrates how proper land and animal management are related to productivity, healthy soil and water quality. Producers can improve the success and sustainability of their farms by:
Setting long- and short-term goals
Taking inventory of grazing resources
Deciding on an optimum stocking rate
Creating a grazing schedule
Rotating animal grazing
Monitoring pasture health

Rural Oklahoma is full of some of the greatest success stories throughout the entire state and is the main reason Oklahoma is on track to become a top 10 state.
The Road to Rural Prosperity will dive into these stories each week, bringing you insight into the great things happening in and to rural Oklahoma. We will bring you stories covering rural life, agriculture, energy, healthcare, tourism, and politics affecting rural America.
The Road to Rural Prosperity is here to tell stories about rural America, for rural America.
Oklahoma Farm Bureau Senior Director for Public Policy Steve Thompson talked with Ron Hays about 2021 Oklahoma Legislative Session in the latest Road to Rural Prosperity. Steve believes "this may have been the best legislative year that I've been a part of- and I've been working on these things in a variety of ways for twenty plus years." He says that the agricultural interests at the Capitol played both offense and defense during the four months that the lawmakers were in session- and cites significant wins in the Ag Sales Tax Exemption and property tax areas that highlighted the 2021 portion of the 57th Legislature.
