| Elmore Bathurst Named to Oklahoma Ag Hall of Fame ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~On Tuesday,
Blackwell farmer and rancher, Elmore Bathurst, was inducted into the
Oklahoma Agricultural Hall of Fame at the State Capitol. Today was
Oklahoma Agriculture Day and the induction served as the closing ceremony.
Bathurst was a founding member of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission when it
began in 1965 and served as its chairman from 1968 to 1970. He has also
been a member of the Oklahoma Wheat Growers Association since 1967 and
served as chairman from 1972 to 1975. Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture, Terry Peach, said Bathurst represents the type of farmer and leader best deserving of the recognition. "Mr. Bathurst and a handful of his peers had the vision nearly 50 years ago to see that agricultural marketing and promotion would be necessary to compete in a global economy," he said. "The actions they took back in the mid 1960s set the stage to help make Oklahoma a leading exporter of wheat to markets such as Mexico and Cuba." The newly inducted Agricultural Hall of Famer offered the same advice to farmers and ranchers he said he received many years ago, don't spend all of your time on a tractor. "Spend part of your time in the political arena and get active about the issues," Bathurst said. "I followed that advice and it was one of the best things I ever did." We have more on Elmore on our website- including a quick conversation that we had with Elmore after the awards ceremony on Tuesday afternoon. Click on the link below for that story. | Ag in the Classroom Honors Students and Salutes the current Ag in the Classroom Teacher of the Year- Audrey Harmon ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Earlier this
year, Morrison Elementary kindergarten teacher, Audrey Harmon, was named
Oklahoma Ag in the Classroom Teacher of the Year. At that time, she was
presented the award in a surprise presentation by Oklahoma Department of
Agriculture AITC coordinators. On Tuesday at the 2009 Ag Day Celebration
at the State Capitol, she was honored as Ag in the Classroom Awards were
handed out to students from around the state. "We are really excited about Mrs. Harmon receiving the award this year because she is such an enthusiastic young teacher," said Dana Bessinger, AITC coordinator. "She's the kind of teacher we like to have teaching kids about agriculture by incorporating it into their lesson plans." A parent of three sons, Harmon is also active in 4-H activities and has a good rapport with local agricultural producers and other parents, she adds. This has made it possible to bring some real hands-on agricultural activities to school.

| Farm Bureau to Congress: Oppose Anti-Antibiotics Bill ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The American
Farm Bureau Federation is expressing strong opposition to legislation that
would remove and restrict important antibiotics for veterinary and farm
use. In a letter to Congress, AFBF President Bob Stallman said the bills
(H.R. 1549 and S. 619) would handicap veterinarians and livestock and
poultry producers in their efforts to protect the nation's food supply and
maintain the health of their farm animals. He said, - in order to raise
healthy animals, we need tools to keep them healthy. Stallman pointed out that - farmers and ranchers and the veterinarians they work with use antibiotics carefully, judiciously and according to label instructions, primarily to treat, prevent and control disease in our flocks and herds. He told members of Congress that by opposing the bills, they would - protect the professional judgment of veterinarians and livestock producers in providing safe and healthful meat products - for consumers. Stallman said more than 40 years of antibiotic use in farm animals proves that such use does not pose a public health threat. In fact, Stallman said - recent government data shows the potential that it might occur is declining. Bacteria survival through food processing and handling is decreasing, food-borne illness is down, development of antibiotic resistant bacteria in animals is stable and resistant food-borne bacteria in humans are declining.
