The United States is preparing to host the Global Sorghum Conference for the very first time, bringing international researchers, key industry stakeholders, and producers together in Lubbock, Texas. In a recent interview, Farm Director KC Sheperd spoke with Monty Christian, Executive Director of Marketing Strategies at Texas Tech University, to discuss what attendees can expect at this landmark gathering.
The upcoming conference will feature cutting-edge research across several agricultural fields. Attendees will explore the latest advancements in crop genomics, plant breeding, agronomy, and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence. Alongside scientific presentations, the event serves as a major networking hub for the global sorghum community.
A premier lineup of keynote speakers and industry leaders will participate throughout the week. Representatives from major organizations—including Bayer Crop Science, John Deere, and Gates Ag One—are scheduled to present. Additionally, commodity groups like the U.S. Sorghum Checkoff Program, headquartered in Lubbock, will play a central role, with featured contributions from Tim Lust, CEO of National Sorghum Producers.
Beyond production statistics and breeding, the conference plans a strong emphasis on the crop’s nutritional benefits for both humans and livestock. Sorghum’s versatility makes it a valuable asset for crop rotation, grain production, and livestock forage, particularly with modern processing tools that enhance feed efficiency. Because sorghum is naturally gluten-free, efforts are underway to expand consumer demand for sorghum-based foods. The conference will showcase this potential through dedicated culinary sessions, featuring a chef preparing specialized sorghum meals and vendors presenting commercial products.
The Global Sorghum Conference is set for September 14–18 at the convention center in downtown Lubbock, Texas. The schedule includes technical sessions, exhibit booths, and specialized workshops—such as the USDA-ARS Sorghum Roadmap, a NASA Acres session, and a sorghum silage workshop focused on cattle nutrition. Evening social events include a welcome reception on Monday, an international food night on Tuesday featuring 13 distinct sorghum dishes, and a Western celebration gala at the Ranching Heritage Center on Wednesday.
