NFU says “Tell USDA: We need truth in labeling”

Did you know that beef can be imported to the U.S. and still be labeled as a product of the USA?

USDA’s proposed rule on “Product of USA” labeling seeks to address this problem by allowing voluntary “Product of USA” or “Made in the USA” labeling only for products derived from animals born, raised, slaughtered, and processed in the United States.

While this label is no substitute for mandatory Country-of-Origin labeling, it is an important improvement to the current voluntary standards. USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack announced this new rule during NFU convention in March 2023.

USDA wants to hear from farmers and consumers about these improved voluntary labels. You can submit a comment using #FairnessforFarmers advocacy tool!

The deadline to submit comments is June 11, 2023.
