Introducing New Technology for Pork Producers 📱

HotHog: New App to Manage Heat Stress  Each year, the U.S. swine industry suffers significant revenue losses due to heat stress in pigs. As we enter the hot summer months, prioritizing the well-being of non-pregnant and gestating sows becomes vital for not only their welfare but their piglets.

To address this challenge, NPB funded research that showed how in-utero heat stress can negatively impact swine health and productivity throughout their entire lifespan. This research contributed to the development of an innovative app for producers called HotHog. Leveraging local weather data, this cutting-edge app accurately predicts the relative comfort or heat stress levels experienced by sows on an hourly, daily or weekly basis.

Producers can also proactively implement preventive measures to support pigs health, efficiency and performance:

•    Make sure pigs have plenty of drinking water
•    Use fans or mists to cool animals
•    Schedule pig transportation during the cooler morning hours

Using the HotHog app and taking swift action based on its predictions allows you to promote the welfare of your pigs while also safeguarding your economic interests.
