Cattle Industry Policy to Be Discussed at Upcoming OCA Convention and Trade Show

Listen to Ron Hays talk with Michael Kelsey about the upcoming annual OCA Convention and Trade Show.

Senior Farm and Ranch Broadcaster, Ron Hays, is back talking with the executive vice president of the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association, Michael Kelsey, with more information about the upcoming Annual OCA Convention and Trade Show.

The OCA’s 71st Annual Convention and Trade Show will be held on July 21st and 22nd in Norman, Oklahoma, at the Embassy Suites Convention Center.

There may be some discussion at the convention, Kelsey said, over how OCA’s policy fits into policy at the national level. One example of policy discussions at the national level, he added, is increasing the Beef Checkoff at the federal level using the ‘96 commodity checkoffs act.

“The ’96 act is a general commodity checkoff act,” Kelsey said. “It is not specific to any one particular commodity.”

While OCA’s policy is supportive of the Beef Checkoff and increasing the Checkoff, Kelsey said it is not set on using the ’96 act.

“It will be interesting to see where our membership comes into play and comes to rest on that topic as we move into NCBA,” Kelsey said.

More policy topics will include the FDA’s modification of antibiotic rules, Waters of the U.S., the Endangered Species Act and more. Aside from the jampacked trade show, Kelsey said this convention is also a great opportunity for cattle producers to network and socialize.

“There is no telling how many dollars of commerce is conducted in the hallways of conventions like this where cattle producers get together, and they start talking about their needs, their businesses, and discover that they have an opportunity to conduct business with somebody there, whether it be feedstuffs, obviously cattle, might be services, and all types of things,” Kelsey said. “Those networking opportunities afford that.”

The closing speaker, Matt Makens of Makens Weather, will talk about the impact El Niño will bring through 2023 and 2024.

“Matt is really easy to follow,” Kelsey said. “What he says makes sense. He gives incredibly good foundations and data to support what he says.”
