Oklahoma Rancher Jimmy Taylor Leads Checkoff Meetings at 2023 Summer Business Meetings in San Diego

Ron Hays talks with Rancher Jimmy Taylor at the 2023 Summer Business Meetings of the CBB in San Diego this week.

Cheyenne, Oklahoma Rancher Jimmy Taylor assumed the chairmanship of the Cattlemen’s Beef Board in February of this year- and is chairing the CBB meetings in San Diego at the summer business meetings.

Between meetings- Senior Farm Broadcaster Ron Hays caught up with Jimmy Taylor to talk about his efforts to lead the checkoff process here in 2023. (click on the audio link above to hear their conversation)

Jimmy Taylor and his wife Tracy run a commercial Angus herd near Cheyenne, Oklahoma consisting of approximately 600 females on 12,000 acres. Their ranching efforts have earned them the 2011 Certified Angus Beef Commitment to Excellence Award and the 2013 Oklahoma Angus Association Commercial Breeder of the Year. The use of artificial insemination, proper nutrition, genomics and other new technologies play a large role in obtaining the operation’s goal: to create a good eating experience for the consumer.

Taylor says he is honored to lead the group of cattle producers from around the country who volunteer their time to be a part of the Cattlemen’s Beef Board as they make decisions about how to invest checkoff dollars collected from each sale of a beef animal across the US. According to the law that established the Beef Checkoff in 1985- those dollars are to be used for promotion, education and research.

The summer business meetings are very important for CBB members- as they will be reviewing current projects authorized last year at the start of the 2023 Fiscal year- and then they are getting a first look at the proposals from checkoff contractors that could be funded in fiscal year 2024, which starts October first.

Taylor says that in recent years, it has been tough in selecting the best way to invest the beef checkoff- as they have annually have had more projects needing funding then the dollars that are available to fund them.

The process here in 2023 is no different as they point to the FT2024 budget- Taylor saying they have a twelve million dollar shortfall.

CBB members are getting to vet the proposals this week- and will offer input ahead of the Beef Operating Committee meeting in September when final decisions for the new fiscal year will be made.
