Showing Pigs at the Fair? Practice Good Biosecurity

Fair season is upon us and practicing good biosecurity is a critical step to keep your pigs healthy before, during and after a pig show. Minimizing the risk of spreading diseases, both for existing U.S. diseases and potential foreign animal diseases, should be a top priority for everyone.

Here are some biosecurity tips:

✅ Contact your veterinarian if your pig is showing signs of illness before the show

✅ Clean and disinfect your show equipment and trailer before and after the show

✅ Wash your hands frequently with warm soapy water after contact with pigs or equipment

✅ No eating or drinking in animal areas, and do not sleep in animal areas

✅ Do not share equipment with other exhibitors

✅ Monitor your pigs for any signs of illness during the show

✅ Do not wear the same clothing or footwear back to your farm that you wore to the fair

✅ Isolate your fair animals from the rest of the herd for at least 2 weeks
