Oklahoma’s Cotton Crop Drops 15 Percent Good to Excellent in This Week’s Crop Progress

Another week of mostly beneficial weather boosted national crop condition ratings for both corn and soybeans for a second week in a row, USDA-NASS reported in its weekly Crop Progress report on Monday.

In Oklahoma, parts of the state received much needed rainfall and experienced slightly cooler temperatures. Recent rains allowed some crops to progress and improve, while other crops are still showing signs of stress. Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 1.56 inches. According to the August 8th US Drought Monitor Report, drought conditions were rated 38 percent abnormally dry to exceptional drought, down 62 points from last year. Additionally, 13 percent of the state was in the moderate drought to exceptional drought categories, down 86 points from the previous year. Statewide, temperatures averaged in the upper 70’s to lower 80’s.

U.S. CROP PROGRESS:

Corn silking reached 96 percent, up 3 percentage points from the previous year and even with the five-year average. Corn dough reached 65 percent, up 5 percentage points from the previous year and up 2 points from the average. Corn dented reached 18 percent, up 3 percent from the previous year and even with the average. Corn conditions rated 59 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair, and 13 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 57 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair, and 14 percent poor to very poor.

Soybeans blooming reached 94 percent, up 2 percentage points from the previous year and the average. Soybeans setting pods reached 78 percent, up 6 percent from the previous year and up 3 from the average. Soybean conditions rated 59 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair, and 12 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 54 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair, and 14 percent poor to very poor.

Cotton squaring reached 96 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and down 1 point from the average. Cotton setting bolls reached 72 percent, down 6 percent from the previous year and down 5 from the average. Cotton bolls opening reached 13 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and the average. Cotton conditions rated 36 percent good to excellent, 21 percent fair, and 43 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 41 percent good to excellent, 25 percent fair, and 33 percent poor to very poor. 

OKLAHOMA:

Corn silking reached 95 percent. Corn dough reached 62 percent, up 9 points from the previous year and up 6 points from normal. Corn dented reached 18 percent, up 2 points from the previous year. Corn conditions rated 74 percent good to excellent, 20 percent fair, and 6 percent poor to very poor.  Last week’s conditions rated 63 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair, and 5 percent poor to very poor. 

Sorghum headed reached 40 percent, down 19 points from the previous year and down 23 points from normal. Sorghum coloring reached 15 percent, down 14 points from the previous year and down 9 points from normal. Sorghum conditions rated 56 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 10 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 55 percent good to excellent, 38 percent fair and 7 percent poor to very poor. 

Soybeans blooming reached 77 percent, up 13 points from the previous year and up 14 points from normal. Soybeans setting pods reached 32 percent, up 1 point from the previous year and up 3 points from normal. Soybean conditions rated 66 percent good to excellent, 26 percent fair, and 8 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 60 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair, and 11 percent poor to very poor. 

Peanuts pegging reached 75 percent, down 4 points from the previous year and down 2 points from normal. Peanut conditions rated 98 percent good to excellent and 2 percent fair. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Cotton squaring reached 96 percent, unchanged from the previous year but down 1 point from normal. Cotton setting bolls reached 70 percent, up 12 points from the previous year and up 5 points from normal. Cotton conditions rated 27 percent good to excellent, 10 percent fair and 63 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 42 percent good to excellent, 21 percent fair and 37 percent poor to very poor. 

Hay: The third cutting of alfalfa hay reached 77 percent, down 7 points from the previous year and down 2 points from normal. The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 15 percent, up 1 point from the previous year but down 2 points from normal. The second cutting of other hay reached 54 percent, down 20 points from the previous year and down 8 points from normal.

Livestock conditions rated 64 percent good to excellent, 24 percent fair and 12 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 64 percent good to excellent, 26 percent fair and 10 percent poor to very poor.

Pasture and range conditions rated 48 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 20 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 49 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 17 percent poor to very poor. 

KANSAS:

Corn silking reached 94 percent, up 5 percentage points from the previous year and down 1 point from the five-year-average. Corn dough reached 68 percent, up 7 percentage points from the previous year and down 1 from the average. Corn dented reached 24 percent, up 2 points from the previous year and down 5 from the average. Corn conditions rated 73 percent good to excellent, 22 percent fair and 5 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 48 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 21 percent poor to very poor.

Soybeans blooming reached 90 percent, up 6 points from the previous year and up 5 from the average. Soybeans setting pods reached 66 percent, up 11 percentage points from the previous year and up 6 from the average. Soybean conditions rated 46 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair, and 21 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 44 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 22 percent poor to very poor. 

Cotton squaring reached 94 percent, down 6 points from the previous year and even with the average. Cotton setting bolls reached 79 percent, down 11 points from the previous year and down 16 points from the average. Cotton bolls opening reached 8 percent, down 3 points from the previous year and up 4 from the average. Cotton conditions rated 62 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair, and 7 percent poor to very poor. Last year’s conditions rated 63 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 6 percent poor to very poor.

Range and pasture conditions rated 33 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 33 percent poor to very poor.

TEXAS:

Corn dough reached 83 percent, up 4 percentage points from the previous year and down 2 points from the average. Corn dented reached 75 percent, up 5 percentage points from the previous year and up 2 points from the average. Corn mature reached 58 percent, even with the previous year, and up 5 points from the average. Corn harvested reached 28 percent, up 1 point from the previous year and up 4 points from the average. Corn conditions rated 56 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair, and 14 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 62 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 10 percent poor to very poor. 

Cotton squaring reached 95 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and even with the average. Cotton setting bolls reached 64 percent, down 10 percentage points from the previous year and down 8 from the average. Cotton conditions rated 14 percent good to excellent, 20 percent fair and 66 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 17 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 56 percent poor to very poor. 

Peanuts pegging reached 75 percent, down 4 points from the previous year and down 5 from the average. Peanut conditions rated 42 percent good to excellent, 55 percent fair and 3 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 5 percent good to excellent, 47 percent fair and 8 percent poor to very poor.

Range and pasture conditions rated 12 percent good to excellent, 18 percent fair, and 70 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 14 percent good to excellent, 22 percent fair, and 64 percent poor to very poor.
