Oklahoma Crop Conditions Remain Steady This Week Except for Cotton, Down 13% Good to Excellent

The return of hot, dry weather over larger portions of the central U.S. late last week halted the recent rise in corn and soybean conditions, USDA-NASS reported in its weekly Crop Progress report on Monday. And with record heat forecast from Texas to Minnesota to Maryland to Florida this week, crop conditions appear likely to take another hit.

U.S. CROP PROGRESS:

Corn dough reached 78 percent, up 5 percentage points from the previous year and down one from the five-year average. Corn dented reached 35 percent, up 6 points from the previous year and up 2 from the average. Corn mature reached 4 percent, even with the previous year and the average. Corn conditions rated 58 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair, and 15 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 59 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair, and 13 percent poor to very poor. 

Soybeans blooming reached 96 percent, even with the previous year and the average. Soybeans setting pods reached 86 percent, up 3 points from the previous year and up 2 from the average. Soybean conditions rated 59 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair, and 13 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 59 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair, and 12 percent poor to very poor. 

Cotton setting bolls reached 81 percent, down 6 percentage points from the previous year and down 3 from the average. Cotton bolls opening reached 18 percent, even with the previous year and down 1 point from the average. Cotton conditions rated 33 percent good to excellent, 21 percent fair and 46 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 36 percent good to excellent, 21 percent fair, and 43 percent poor to very poor. 

OKLAHOMA:

Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.10 inches. According to the August 15th US Drought Monitor Report, drought conditions were rated 36 percent abnormally dry to exceptional drought, down 64 points from last year. Additionally, 13 percent of the state was in the moderate drought to exceptional drought categories, down 86 points from the previous year. Statewide, temperatures averaged in the low to mid 80’s. Topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions were rated adequate to short.

Corn dough reached 72 percent, up 11 points from the previous year and up 4 points from normal. Corn conditions rated 74 percent good to excellent, 18 percent fair, and 8 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 74 percent good to excellent, 20 percent fair, and 6 percent poor to very poor.  

Sorghum headed reached 50 percent, down 19 points from the previous year and down 25 points from normal. Sorghum coloring reached 16 percent, down 23 points from the previous year and down 17 points from normal. Sorghum conditions rated 56 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 16 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 56 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 10 percent poor to very poor. 

Soybeans blooming reached 82 percent, up 9 points from the previous year and up 7 points from normal. Soybeans setting pods reached 44 percent, up 4 points from the previous year and up 5 points from normal. Soybean conditions rated 69 percent good to excellent, 24 percent fair and 7 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 66 percent good to excellent, 26 percent fair, and 8 percent poor to very poor. 

Peanuts pegging reached 83 percent, down 6 points from the previous year and down 2 points from normal. Peanuts mature reached 5 percent, down 4 points from the previous year and down 2 points from normal. Peanut conditions rated 98 percent good to excellent and 2 percent fair. Last week’s conditions rated the same.

Cotton setting bolls reached 80 percent, up 3 points from the previous year and from normal. Cotton bolls opening reached 5 percent, up 5 points from the previous year but down 1 point from normal. Cotton conditions rated 14 percent good to excellent, 21 percent fair and 65 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 27 percent good to excellent, 10 percent fair and 63 percent poor to very poor. 

Livestock conditions rated 62 percent good to excellent, 24 percent fair and 14 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 64 percent good to excellent, 24 percent fair and 12 percent poor to very poor.

Range and pasture conditions rated 49 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 20 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 48 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 20 percent poor to very poor. 

KANSAS:

Corn silking was 97 percent, near 93 percent last year and 98 percent for the five-year average. Dough was 80 percent, ahead of 72 percent last year, but near 81 percent average. Dented was 48 percent, near 44 percent last year and 47 percent average. Mature was 7 percent, near 11 percent last year and 8 percent average. Corn conditions rated 41 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair and 26 percent poor to very poor.

Soybeans blooming was 94 percent, near 90 percent last year and 91 percent average. Setting pods was 76 percent, ahead of 66 percent last year, and near 72 percent average. Soybean conditions rated 40 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 26 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 46 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair, and 21 percent poor to very poor.

Sorghum headed was 76 percent, ahead of 66 percent last year, but near 78 percent average. Coloring was 22 percent, ahead of 15 percent last year, and equal to average. Mature was 1 percent. Sorghum conditions rated 47 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair and 20 percent poor to very poor.

Cotton squaring was 95 percent, behind 100 percent last year, and near 97 percent average. Setting bolls was 85 percent, behind 95 percent last year, but ahead of 76 percent average. Bolls opening was 10 percent, behind 16 percent last year, but near 7 percent average. Cotton conditions rated 55 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 10 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 62 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair, and 7 percent poor to very poor.

Pasture and range conditions rated 29 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 37 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 33 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 33 percent poor to very poor.

TEXAS:

Corn dough reached 86 percent, up one percentage point from the previous year and down 4 points from the five-year average. Corn dented reached 78 percent, up 3 points from the previous year and down one from the average. Corn mature reached 62 percent, down 4 points from the previous year and up 4 points from the average. Corn harvested reached 45 percent, up 3 points from the previous year and up 5 from the average. Corn conditions rated 54 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 19 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 56 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair, and 14 percent poor to very poor. 

Cotton setting bolls reached 74 percent, down 10 percentage points from the previous year and down 6 from the average. Cotton conditions rated 10 percent good to excellent, 19 percent fair and 71 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 14 percent good to excellent, 20 percent fair and 66 percent poor to very poor. 

Peanuts pegging reached 85 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and rand down 2 from the average. Peanut conditions rated 33 percent good to excellent, 56 percent fair and 11 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 42 percent good to excellent, 55 percent fair and 3 percent poor to very poor. 

Sorghum headed reached 95 percent, down 2 points from the previous year and up 2 from the average. Sorghum coloring reached 80 percent, even with the previous year and up 1 point from the average. Sorghum mature reached 65 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and down 3 from the average. Sorghum harvested reached 53 percent, up 2 points from the previous year and down 3 from the average. Sorghum conditions rated 45 percent good to excellent, 22 percent fair and 33 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 51 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair, and 22 percent poor to very poor.

Soybeans setting pods reached 77 percent, down 7 points from the previous year and down 3 from the average. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 35 percent, down 11 points from the previous year and down 1 point from the average. Soybean conditions rated 46 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 27 percent poor to very poor.

Range and pasture conditions rated 7 percent good to excellent, 16 percent fair, and 77 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 12 percent good to excellent, 18 percent fair, and 70 percent poor to very poor.
